When four old University friends set off into the Scandinavian wilderness of the Arctic Circle, they aim to briefly escape the problems of their lives and reconnect with one another. But when Luke, the only man still single and living a precarious existence, finds he has little left in common with his well-heeled friends, tensions rise. With limited experience between them, a shortcut meant to ease their hike turns into a nightmare scenario that could cost them their lives. Almost like 3 stories all weaved into one REALLY entertaining. You’ve got your survival adventure that’s laced with some cultural lore! Plenty of murderous, head banging mayhem that’s drenched Nordic theology. And one hell of wicked creature to deal with as well!
Throw in some thrills, chills and a whole lot of descriptive imagery that makes you cry WTF for quite a few different reasons throughout. And I think you’ll be more than pleased if you go in as blind as I did. This is the book I’ve had the chance to read if Mr Nevill’s, but after this one I will definitely be thirsting for more.

The book starts off with a bang! Great writing and top notch story telling. It even transitions pretty well to the first movie and the “curse”. But then…. Yeah. Much like the scary lore with girl herself… somethings are just better left alone.
The third act dragged on and fell flat. And the fourth??? Ooof. Went way off the rails and the only worse than the point Twist, was the sanctimonious and insanity boring journalist that served as the long overdue nail in the coffin to this gothic bore.

The critically acclaimed novelist and social critic Aldous Huxley, describes his personal experimentation with the drug mescaline and explores the nature of visionary experience. The title of this classic comes from William Blake's The Marriage of Heaven and Hell: "If the doors of perception were cleansed every thing would appear to man as it is, infinite. For man has closed himself up, till he sees all things through narrow chinks of his cavern."

In this genre-bending novel, among the first to have launched sci fi into literature, a group of remarkable social outcasts band together for survival and discover that their combined powers render them superhuman. Together, they may represent the next step in evolution - or the final chapter in the history of the human race. As they struggle to find whether they are meant to help humanity or destroy it, Sturgeon explores questions of power and morality, individuality and belonging.

Evolution you say?
Revisado: 12-14-24
People will come up with anything, any idea … any ethos… to clench to the dying law of human superiority. That there is some inner goodness inside that will prevail and carry on. Alas, the real problem with the human condition, is the first part. We aren’t evolving or awakening. We are decomposing and spiraling. We are regressing to the point of extermination. And extinction can’t come soon enough.

lol a thriller you say? Hardly, Thank God it was free. The story was actually pretty predictable until the big “twist”. Which was so unrealistic and down right goofy that it barely drew an eye roll, much less any gasps. Even the plot and dialog felt more like a bad romance novel or gossip session, than any kind of genuine mystery or thriller.

This isn’t dark… just grotesque depravity
Revisado: 12-01-24
Well, this has to be one of the biggest disappointments I’ve suffered through in ages. Heard the hype on this “artistic soul ripper” fire ages. Alas, it was wonderfully written garbage. And there is no questioning Burroughs command and amazing ability to weave to words of mental illness and addiction into a poetic catastrophe of filth!
Not dark… simply disgusting. But considering the state of the world, now and apparently then. I’m not surprised in the least this has such a “cult” following. And never before has the term been so deserves. This blows way past perverted and spirals into the depths of the lowest of the criminal world. I couldn’t tell if he was a junkie or some political or elitist pederast pig!
Some books have a way of getting under the skin and festering in your mind for weeks, sometimes even years to come… I pray to all that is holy that THIS is not one of those occurrences.

Everything I thought it’d be… and so much more
Revisado: 05-30-24
Every now and again, you are treated to a true and timeless piece of living art. This one just so happens to be etched into the darkness of the human condition.
What is left to discover once a man looks deep into his heart… and then into the abyss of eternity? When all the selfishness, the delusion, the conformity and the discovery of “self” is at its end. And all that is left is the truth of our existence. Our aspirations, our desires, our conquests? For most it is darkness. And the horror that comes with it.

The absolute worst of humanity… and that’s just the beginning!
Revisado: 05-24-24
Wow, how or why could someone write a book about a man like Lester Ballard? What is there to say about a man without an ounce of decency in his genetic make up or God given soul? The answer… plenty!
Cormac seems to be fascinated by the root of evil in mankind, or perhaps just in horrors of evil itself. And in Child of God… he does a great job of personifying the evil of man in Lester Ballard. An outcast of society, who in turn, decides to completely cast out the laws of not only society, but God himself. The story goes about how you’d except from there… but it doesn’t, it’s even worse!
As usual the story is well written with all the trademarks that have made McCarthy a treasure of our time. The vivid descriptions, the almost poetic adoration to the words themself, and… the harrowing dissection and descriptions of the absolute worst in human nature.
I always find it fascinating that in a time where gore and sadistic violence is glorified. When abominations like Leatherface, Hannibal Lecter, and Michael Myers are hailed and adored with cult icon status. You still have readers who “love this kind of stuff” that will trash writings like this as too vile and “unnecessary”. To each their own I suppose. A book like this is obviously not for everyone, and quite possibly SHOULDN’T BE for anyone. But the point he was making is crystal clear in my eyes. And that’s where the real fear and grotesqueness of a story like this stems from. Not a single, horrific atrocity in this book hasn’t been committed by a human, not some glorified monster, multiple times throughout history. Are they created or manifested and does it really matter? Because the reality is, they are here and. Walk among us.

Author of the National Book Award-winning All the Pretty Horses, Cormac McCarthy is one of the most provocative American stylists to emerge in the last century. The striking novel Blood Meridian offers an unflinching narrative of the brutality that accompanied the push west on the 1850s Texas frontier.

Another Cormac classic… another favorite!
Revisado: 05-19-24
I had extremely high hopes for this one from everything I had heard and read about it. I recently finished The Road immediately followed by No Country for Old Men. Neither one disappointed and both became instant favorites of mine. Horror is definitely my preferred genre, and although I can’t say I’d categorize this one as such… there is no questioning how deeply seeded humanity is within its definition. This book absolutely demands that this concept is acknowledged.
It didn’t start off like I was expecting at all. In fact about half way through I had some serious doubts. But once it started clicking and things were coming together… boy, did it deliver! As much as I ended up loving this one by the ending, I can completely understand how this book won’t be for everyone. And that’s probably a good thing. Because for me… with some of my thoughts and actions in the past, some of the ways I view things even now, how I have followed along with quite a few things I sincerely thought were not only acceptable, but honorable and to be exalted! This was a terrifying look in a mirror of the past and how dangerously close I was to falling like countless others throughout time.
The characters are moderately well developed, with the exception of one. Perhaps the greatest villain of all time, by one name or another. But I really saw the brilliance in the sort of partial character builds because in my mind at least… they could really I’m be just about anyone or everyone. And I think that was the point.
This book definitely had its ups and downs. It’s exciting points and parts that seemed almost pointless or drug on. But such is life. One thing is for certain, this is one i will never forget!
