Historia
Malcolm Gladwell has long relished the opportunity to skewer the upper echelons of higher education, from the institution of U.S. News & World Report’s Best College rankings to the LSATs to the luxe Bowdoin College cafeteria. I Hate the Ivy League: Riffs and Rants on Elite Education, upends the traditional thinking around how education should work and tries to get to the bottom of why we often reward the wrong people.

As a father of 4 teens entering this incredible maze and mess that is college admissions this collection was both depressing and enlightening. Malcolm should be the czar of everything. lol

Historia
Racist anti-immigration policies, from the border wall to the Muslim ban, have left many Americans wondering: How did we get here? In a sweeping account, Reece Jones reveals that although the US is often mythologized as a nation of immigrants, it has a long history of immigration restrictions that are rooted in the racist fear of the “great replacement” of whites with non-white immigrants.

This should replace all history books in schools
Revisado: 06-03-23
Well…it at least should be required reading by all American history students in high school.
As an immigration attorney I can attest to many of the arguments made in this book. The anecdotes are real. The fear most immigrants feel is debilitating. And the ignorance spouted off by the GOP about the “solutions” is racism couched as “economics”.
This country was founded by immigrants and all of our ancestors (I’m a white male with European ancestry) came here seeking refuge from oppression and economic opportunity. That is the SAME reason people come here today. Except now they come from mostly non-white countries and this terrifies a huge portion of our country who buys into the lies spread by conservative media. This book reveals these tactics are as old as our country itself and provides great context and history to this never-ending problem.
May we as Americans break free of this racial rhetoric and live up to our country’s original dream. People from around the world come here precisely because they still believe in us…and we all too often we fail them.

Now the hotheaded young lawyer is in the public eye yet again - this time, accused of murder. Jalen Jordan retained Street for what seemed to be a minor traffic violation, but when evidence turned up linking Jordan to the death of two boys, Street wanted out of the case.

Ok legal thriller that is premised on a falsehood
Revisado: 03-14-23
The entire story depends on an attorney who pretends he cannot tell law enforcement a known killer/rapist has now credibly threatened his son with the same. Nearly every single state including the ABA model rules of professional conduct include some sort of “save a life” exception to breaking privilege. It was pretty hard to take the book seriously after that.
Story was ok. Narration excellent.

Katniss Everdeen, girl on fire, has survived, even though her home has been destroyed. Peeta has been captured by the Capitol. District 13 really does exist. There are rebels. There are new leaders. A revolution is unfolding. It is by design that Katniss was rescued from the arena in the cruel and haunting Quarter Quell, and it is by design that she has long been part of the revolution without knowing it. District 13 has come out of the shadows and is plotting to overthrow the Capitol. Everyone, it seems, has had a hand in the carefully laid plans - except Katniss.

Amazing finale to epic trilogy
Revisado: 11-30-22
Ms Collins has a unique gift to write a fiction story that seems real and applicable to today’s world.
Also this is the best narration I’ve listened to on audible. Outstanding performance and I hope to hear from Tatiana more.

Robotic narration but overall good

The narrator sounds like the male computer voice from the 90’s. Hard to listen to but eventually got used to it.
Not enough courtroom scenes IMO but solid story and worth a leisurely read.

Worst audiobook narrator I’ve ever listened to
Revisado: 06-13-22
4.5 hours in the story was basically in the same spot and I couldn’t take the narration. She’s awful. She sounds like she’s bored out of her mind and reads super slow. Hardly any character distinction. Tough listen. As a long time 30-year Grisham fan this was a disappointment in all levels.

Best Mickey Holler story to date
Revisado: 05-13-22
Hopefully not the last either. Connelly’s courtroom thrillers have few competitors. Fast paced and fun read. As a fellow attorney I enjoy greatly the back and forth of the lawyers and judges. Loved the couple digs on Trump, though not named they are deserved and true.

Really struggled with the ending
Revisado: 03-22-22
Don’t wanna spoil anything but I found the ending to be quite a stretch. Surprise for surprise’s sake feels a bit contrived for a Connelly novel and even addressed the awkward way he tries to resolve it in the book with some dialogue but it still fell a bit short for me.
I still love the courtroom banter and story and overall it was a good read.

Interesting and important but ultimately falls short
Revisado: 03-08-22
Basically just both-sides an entire debate on housing without really offering any real solutions. Interesting way to discuss the issue but I honestly wanted more data or a solutions-oriented approach at the end rather than a “well both sides don’t help this issue”.
