Very well done, but a dark story
Revisado: 07-06-19
Mr Hardy paints stories so well that you invest in them, but his stories are not fairytales.

The work tells the story of Jane's early life, her experience at Lowood School and as a governess. Her refusal to accept Rochester's love on any but her own strictly moral terms is a passionate cry for independence.

Historia
Sammy Woodhouse was just 14 when she met Arshid Hussain. Ten years older, he promised to take care of her. Sammy thought she was in love, but in reality she was being groomed by a ringleader of Britain's most notorious child sex ring. Just A Child tells the heartbreaking story of how a young girl from Rotherham was abused by her drug-dealing 'boyfriend', eventually giving birth to his baby, right under the nose of the very authorities who were meant to protect her. When reality dawned, Sammy realised she was one of countless vulnerable child victims - many of whom were trafficked around the north of England.

Heartbreaking story
Revisado: 07-06-19
I didn't understand grooming until I listened to this story. You can hardly believe the scale of this situation - the number of people affected over such an insane period of time! Surely, the more people who have a real understanding of grooming, the better armed we are to protect our children moving forward. Thank you for sharing your story Sammy.

Historia
On the surface, the Victorian age is one of propriety, industry, prudishness and piety. But scratch the surface and you’ll find scandal, sadism, sex, madness, malice and murder. Presented by Stephen Fry, this series delves deep into a period of time we think we know, to discover an altogether darker reality. The stories we’re told offer a different perspective on an era which underwent massive social change. As education, trade, technology and culture blossomed, why was there an undercurrent of the ‘forbidden’ festering beneath Victorian society?

I REALLY enjoyed this
Revisado: 07-13-14
What did you love best about Life After Life?
It's such a creative story! The characters were so easy to attach to and the reader has such talent for telling the story, not just reading.
What other book might you compare Life After Life to and why?
It's such a creative story. I can't compare it to anything because I've never read/listened to another story quite like it.
Have you listened to any of Fenella Woolgar’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
I had not listened to Fenella before but her voice is so fantastic for audio books that I will definately be looking out for more of her books.
If you could take any character from Life After Life out to dinner, who would it be and why?
This is a hard one. I'm tossing up between Ursula and Izzy. Izzy would be highly entertaining, but Ursula would the character I would be most interested in chatting to.
Any additional comments?
Thank you to the author for such an entertaining story.

Historia
The Triffids are a monstrous species of stinging plant; they walk, they talk, they dominate the world. The narrator of this novel wakes up in hospital to find that, by missing the end of the world as he knew it, he has survived to witness a new one. But the new world that awaits him is fantastic, horrific - and entirely plausible.

I was thoroughly entertained from beginning to end
Revisado: 02-20-13
What did you love best about The Day Of The Triffids?
This story was like putting on a special pair of lenses which showed you the world you currently live in, after humanity implodes on itself.
Through this story you also view yourself differently - how capable and resilient are you when it's important? And when significant pressure is applied what kind of human being would you be?
Curiously, although written in the 50's, Wyndham has told a story which really hasn't aged, in fact it seems potently relevant for recent times. Our collective ingenuity has a seedy underbelly which could adversely affect our very existence if not managed correctly.
What did you like best about this story?
Wyndham grabbed me from the get-go and I was in this story, alongside Bill, all the way.
What does Samuel West bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
What a fabulous voice! I can't imagine Bill sounding any other way. I was 100% satisfied with his intonation/pace/sound. Loved listening to him.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
Who will survive.. and how???
Any additional comments?
This story has a place in my personal top 5!
