It was ok.

Possibly too many details, but very complete. Next to nothing on how it affected individuals or their neighborhoods. Strange to quote online sources, to my ear. I'd go 2.5 stars if it were an option. It sort of reads like a textbook in spots, tho.

Historia
Right from the start, Bigger Thomas had been headed for jail. It could have been for assault or petty larceny; by chance, it was for murder and rape. Native Son tells the story of this young black man caught in a downward spiral after he kills a young white woman in a brief moment of panic. Set in Chicago in the 1930s, Richard Wright's powerful novel is an unsparing reflection on the poverty and feelings of hopelessness experienced by people in inner cities across the country and of what it means to be black in America.

Generally, I find "classics" dull to read.
Revisado: 04-08-25
It started out interesting and more updated than most classics read (obviously, you have to take that with grains of salt. And not use a modern eye to read books that are 85 years old...), but I get VERY bored with "verbatim" court dialog. I liked the prosecutor's argument, tho. I hate when people make excuses for how adults CHOOSE to act--even fictitious ones.
I like the narrator.
Btw, if you have original copies of this book from 1940 (I wound up with two copies: one from a free bookstore in excellent shape, and another kept by my family for 85 years. Autographed by my great-aunt in 1940. No dust jacket)--you'll find the description of the crude movie scene is cut out. It's basically a circle jerk w just the 2 guys. Apparently intended to show the uncivilized nature of how they were raised and the way they grew up...?
Some possible spoilers:
I was very confused about the rape issue: were the women raped or not? And if so, why?? Bessie might or might not have been (she said no and protested), but it wouldn't have been called such then, I don't think. Mary? Aren't young men taught above all else: NO. DRUNK. CHICKS. No matter what. I didn't see how Bessie was in far enough to get killed, though. Wonder of I didn't miss something.
Of the classics, I've read Roots, Gone with the Wind and Don Quixote. The first two I've read a few times, the last was VERY tedious and about 300 pages too long! The other 2 are over 800 pages. Drags a bit in spots. but worth it overall.
I tried Lord of the Flies, but maybe it was just the narrator (author), that I had a hard time caring about. I found the 80s edition of the paperback and I always liked the cover. Wound up giving it to someone. I was sad they didn't describe the plane crash.
Just so anyone reading can see where I'm coming from, I normally read a lot of true crime, Bentley Little horror, design books, plane crash accounts, famous fires, and James Herriot dog stories types of books. Right now, we're reading about the real Mad Men/Women...

It's a fast listen, although his endings can be a bit anticlimactic. Just like King, you stick around for the bizarre imagery descriptions. I thought the last half-hour wasn't as good as the rest.

Obviously, takes a little bit to get used to a story from the 1920s. I found this in a book called "Jackets Required" about the artwork on Dust Jackets from 1920-2950. I try not to aquire books I haven't read, though, because that can get expensive. Especially antique or vintage in very good shape. This is about an alcoholic. There's going to be some derogatory terms and such, so be ready for that. One was "wop-dego." Which I found kind of funny because my family used to tell jokes about that, once we weren't all that welcome coming from the old country. I wasn't that bothered by it, due to its age.

Historia
Since the Chornobyl nuclear disaster, the area remains a toxic, forbidden wasteland. The zone has become a place for meditation at the edge of geography where you can lose yourself. As with all dangerous places, this terra incognita attracts a wild assortment of adventurers. Markiyan Kamysh, whose father was an on-site disaster liquidator, works as a "stalker," guiding people who dare to venture into the disaster area for thrills. Kamysh tells us about thieves who hide in the abandoned buildings, the policemen who chase them, and the romantic utopists who have built families here.

Really an interesting book.
Revisado: 10-27-24
It's so cheerful, compared to the author's photograph. I don't know what it is about Russians and Poles, but you see this angry look a lot. It's a lot more poetic than you'd think, again, by looking at him.
I had a hard copy from the library, trying to clear off my "for later" list to under 1,000 titles. I don't ever manage it, but...goals...so, shorter items and movies first. They're easier to make up your mind about than something long, where it might take a bit to really get moving.
Found this here, free, which means I can listen and make dinner and walk the dogs and be done in short order. It's sort of like a small cannoli. Just the perfect, bite-sized length.
I normally listen at at least 1.85+ speed. I might speed up for boring parts that are repetitive or court dialog (Ann Rule). I didn't do that here.

Historia
When Mark Greenside - a native New Yorker living in California, political lefty, writer, and lifelong skeptic - is dragged by his girlfriend to a tiny Celtic village in Brittany at the westernmost edge of France in Finistere, or what he describes as "the end of the world," his life begins to change. In a playful, headlong style, and with enormous affection for the Bretons, Greenside shares how he makes a life for himself in a country where he doesn't speak the language or understand the culture.

I liked the narrator. The story was more in-depth than many "fish out of water" stories. Not too long. Short chapters are always nice. Might have to slow speed down if you normally listen fast. Wish there were more translations.
