Not your average LitRPG

I started this series not realizing it was a LitRPG (that’s what I get for judging a book by it’s cover and not reading said cover lol), but boy am I glad I did. I have a love hate relationship with them as I am a gamer, and love to read but lots of LitRPGs focus on the states, and leveling more than the start which gets old. This series focuses more on the story and has RPG elements making it way more enjoyable. The narrator could not be more awesome if he tried. I’ll be seeking more of his works out in the future. Fantastic series.

Slow to start and whispering narrator

The story is painfully slow to start. There’s lots of terminology that no one would know that’s never explained, or explained very late in the book. Eventually it picks up and the end makes you want to know what happens next. The narrator is okay. Greg voice but there is 0 excitement or animation to it, and anytime a character is speaking he whispers. People don’t talk like that. Overall I don’t think it was a waist of time, but it could have been better with a different narrator and more explanations of unknown terminology.

An utterly boring story

I honestly can’t believe this book was endorsed by George Martin. Absolutely nothing interesting happens throughout the entire book. I’m thinking this was either the longest prologue I’ve ever read, or this is just genuinely a bad book. The narrator was absolutely fantastic. 10 out of 10 all day. But the story itself was just so uneventful. It’s a basic story of a plot to assassinate someone, with some girl opening her own bank. That’s it. Knowing that would you still read this book? I doubt it. I can’t decide if I’m done with the series, or if I should just listen to the next one because I’m curious to see if it gets any better.

Basically the Wheel of Time

I enjoyed this book an would recommend it to anyone that hasn’t read the Wheel of Time. It’s so similar to the WoT in both the way it reads, the terminology and the magic that I swear that I’d not be surprised if it was used as a template for the books. That being said it was well written and was a fun listen. Lost some point for the lack of creativity with the magic. I mean it’s MAGIC. You can do anything with it and yet there were maybe 5 spells used through the entire series. They were mages. They were fire makers cause that’s all they did. I would recommend but if you read the WoT I’d move on.
