Historia
First published in 1944, Fell Murder sees E.C.R. Lorac at the height of her considerable powers as a purveyor of well-made and traditional detective fiction. The book presents a fascinating 'return of the prodigal' mystery set in the later stages of the Second World War, amidst the close-knit farmerfolk community of Lancashire's lovely Lune valley. The Garths had farmed their fertile acres for generations.

A Most Satisfying Story
Revisado: 12-12-23
I wasn’t engaged immediately, but as the characters and the setting developed, I found myself drawn in. I especially liked the depiction of the country and the people.

Satisfactory With Exceptions
Revisado: 10-05-20
I gave the overall story a 4 because I didn’t think the subsidiary characters were too well developed. Hastings,Poirot, and the puzzle of the plot were up to expectations.

Narrator not a Good Fit
Revisado: 03-09-20
This is not a critique of the narrator but a personal reaction. I found the narrator’s voice a distraction from the story. I felt it would have been a better match with a Miss Marple or a similar character’s novel.

Selchester Castle in 1953 sits quiet and near-empty, its corridors echoing with glories of the past. Or so it seems to intelligence officer Hugo Hawksworth, wounded on a secret mission and now reluctantly assuming an altogether less perilous role at Selchester.

Interesting but Slow to Develop
Revisado: 01-14-17
I would describe this as a "cozy" mystery. Good vocal characterizations. Interesting characters and setting. I thought the plot was slow to develop but it held my attention.

I enjoy Cleeves' Shetland novels as much for the rich picture of the islands' people, geography, and culture as for the mysteries.

Historia
A society wedding at Ely Cathedral in Cambridgeshire becomes a crime scene when a man is murdered. After another body is found, the baffled local constabulary turns to Scotland Yard. Though the second crime had a witness, her description of the killer is so strange it's unbelievable. Despite his experience, Inspector Ian Rutledge has few answers of his own. The victims are so different that there is no rhyme or reason to their deaths. Nothing logically seems to connect them - except the killer. As the investigation widens, a clear suspect emerges. But for Rutledge, the facts still don't add up, leaving him to question his own judgment.

One of the most compelling mysteries I've read lately. Full of characters that are as interesting as the mystery itself. This is the first book in the series that I've read but I will certainly be looking for more.
