Women's Freedom is at Risk
Revisado: 03-19-25
Hillary gives background, from an educated woman's perspective, to our country's history and our current circumstances. I can't say enough good things about this book. Even if you have a hard time relating to history you will be able to relate to how it is presented.

Historia
There is a voice of longing inside each woman. We strive so mightily to be good: good partners, daughters, mothers, employees, and friends. We hope all this striving will make us feel alive. Instead, it leaves us feeling weary, stuck, overwhelmed, and underwhelmed. We look at our lives and wonder: Wasn’t it all supposed to be more beautiful than this? We quickly silence that question, telling ourselves to be grateful, hiding our discontent—even from ourselves.

Wonderful perspective!
Revisado: 04-09-22
Thank you for sharing your perspective and vulnerability with the world. I have learned a lot through your writing.
This rating is not 5 stars all the way because the editing is lacking in a few areas where parts of sentences were repeated. Otherwise, this was definitely worth the listen.

Revisado: 07-07-17
I love this story. Chip & Joanna are a really good example of people living their lives. They take chances, are true to their word, and are very real.

With poignant insight and humor, Frank Vertosick, Jr., MD, describes some of the greatest challenges of his career, including a six-week-old infant with a tumor in her brain, a young man struck down in his prime by paraplegia, and a minister with a .22-caliber bullet lodged in his skull. Told through intimate portraits of Vertosick's patients and unsparing-yet-fascinatingly detailed descriptions of surgical procedures, When the Air Hits Your Brain illuminates both the mysteries of the mind and the realities of the operating room.

It didn't catch me at the start and I thought about returning the book. I'm glad that I kept listening. He showed the human side of doctors, and how a small change in timing can lead us to things we never would have imagined.

Meet Ove. He's a curmudgeon - the kind of man who points at people he dislikes as if they were burglars caught outside his bedroom window. He has staunch principles, strict routines, and a short fuse. People call him "the bitter neighbor from hell". But behind the cranky exterior there is a story and a sadness.

I didn't expect to like this...
Revisado: 02-06-17
I didn't really expect to like this book, but it got great reviews so I gave it a try. The beginning starts out pretty negative, and I almost stopped listening, but there were the great reviews so I let it continue. About a third of the way in, Ove started growing on me. Well before the finish, I was hooked and couldn't wait until I could listen again. This is a really good book that taught me something about "different" people, and that is that we all have the potential to add value.

Inspiring story about how running replaced other addictions.
Revisado: 12-11-16
I loved this book but the tone on the narration fell short. As a runner myself, I could relate to pretty much all of his running thoughts. For those marathons that I had in common with the author, I got to relive the experiences, both good and not so good.
I will definitely recommend this book for my running friends, and for people suffering with addictions, as well as those people who have an addict in their family or circle of friends, as I do/did. It was enlightening.

I didn't expect to love this book!
Revisado: 09-03-16
I bought this book in a hurry and by accident, not realizing it was about Huntington' Disease. Once I did realize the subject matter I expected it to be very depressing. It is a sobering book, and made me reflect on my life, but it was really life affirming, and about family and love. I listened to it every opportunity that I had, and I want to hear more of their story. What a wonderful book! I highly recommend it.

I didn't want this book to end!
Revisado: 04-28-16
Would you listen to Up Country again? Why?
Possibly, and I don't read books or watch movies a second time. It was rich with information about the Vietnam war, and brought to life something that I grew up with, but didn't really understand at the time.
Which character – as performed by Scott Brick – was your favorite?
I love Paul's sarcasm, and Susan's way of handling things. They were a great combination. If I really have to choose, I guess Paul, but Susan is right up there with him.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes, and because I couldn't, I listened to it every chance I got, including on the short trip to/from my office, or even the 5 minutes that it takes to get to the local CVS.
Any additional comments?
I didn't want this book to end, and I want to know what happens with Paul and Susan! I'm going to see if Nelson DeMille has written another book after this one related to these 2 characters.

Historia
With courage, grace, and powerful insight, bestselling author Kristin Hannah captures the epic panorama of World War II and illuminates an intimate part of history seldom seen: the women's war. The Nightingale tells the stories of two sisters, separated by years and experience, by ideals, passion and circumstance, each embarking on her own dangerous path toward survival, love, and freedom in German-occupied, war-torn France—a heartbreakingly beautiful novel that celebrates the resilience of the human spirit and the durability of women. It is a novel for everyone, a novel for a lifetime.

I've read and/or listened to many books about this time period, but this one somehow made it very real and clear to me, all that people suffered, how they managed to survive physically and mentally. Truly an amazing story.
