Historia
Platypuses are mammals unlike any other on earth. They lay eggs, ooze milk through their skin, and can sense electricity. In this episode, we travel with a platypus as he moves through his nightly routine on the island of Tasmania. He uses electroreceptors to hunt underwater and does a synchronized swimming courtship ritual with his mate, who then digs a burrow 40 feet deep into the riverbank to nest.

I love this series, not only because it is remarkably effective. The information on the platypus is fascinating, but the soft rain in the background is hypnotic and sleep inducing. Best in series!

Historia
October “Toby” Daye is a changeling, the daughter of Amandine of the fae and a mortal man. Like her mother, she is gifted in blood magic, able to read what has happened to a person through a mere taste of blood. Half-human, half-fae, outsiders from birth, most changelings are second-class children of Faerie spending their lives fighting for the respect of their immortal relations. Toby is the only changeling who has earned knighthood, and she re-earns that position every day.

Disappointed
Revisado: 03-15-25
I Have become a big fan of Seanan McGuire, but this October Daye series is not living up to any of her series that I had previously read. The characters are wooden, and have next to no emotional depth.

Historia
The Price family has spent generations studying the monsters of the world, working to protect them from humanity - and humanity from them. Enter Verity Price. Despite being trained from birth as a cryptozoologist, she'd rather dance a tango than tangle with a demon, and is spending a year in Manhattan while she pursues her career in professional ballroom dance. Sounds pretty simple, right?

Real Disappointment
Revisado: 01-25-25
I read this book because Seanan McGuire was becoming one of my new favorite authors, but this book was a severe disappointment for me. The main character is one of the types I’ve always hated. She constantly raves about her abilities, her family, herself -basically there’s no one better on earth. I got so irritated with this, I only finished the book out of spite.

Historia
All across the world, people look up at the moon and dream of gods. Gods of knowledge and wisdom, gods of tides and longevity. Over time, some of these moon gods incarnated into the human world alongside the other manifest natural concepts. Their job is to cross the sky above the Impossible City—the heart of all creation—to keep it connected to reality. And someone is killing them. There are so many of them that it's easy for a few disappearances to slip through the cracks. But they aren't limitless.

Amazing Trilogy
Revisado: 12-08-24
It’s a rare book that engenders regret when one is finishing it, and it is even more felt when this is the end of a magnificent series. The series that begins with “Middlegame” end with this book, and it is vital to the explanation of many questions that arise during the previous 2 books. I would unhesitatingly recommend these books to any reader.

Wonderful World
Revisado: 10-27-24
I have always loved alternate world novels. This is the 7th or 8th book I have read set in this world created by T. Kingfisher and that’s not counting several short stories by her set there as well. I think I’ve read everything I can find but I do recommend starting the Paladin novels first. I think that I’ve read everything now. Looking forward to another miss Kingfisher!

Historia
Kai and Caleb Goodacre have been kidnapped just as rumors of a cult sweeping across the reservation leads Maggie and Hastiin to investigate an outpost, and what they find there will challenge everything they’ve come to know in this action-packed sequel to Trail of Lightning. It’s been four weeks since the bloody showdown, and Maggie Hoskie, Diné monster hunter, is trying to make the best of things. Only her latest bounty hunt has gone sideways, she’s lost her only friend, Kai Arviso, and she’s somehow found herself responsible for a girl with a strange clan power.

Original & Brilliant
Revisado: 07-14-24
This is the second in a wonderful series written by Roanhorse who is a new author to me. I am blown away by the originality of both books. I grew up in New Mexico and am fairly familiar with Navajo culture, but this book opened up an entire new world to me. I would recommend this book to virtually anybody who loves dystopian science fiction, or any type of Indigenous literature. Fantastic read! For those interested the initial book in the series is called “Trail of Lightning.”

Historia
Sixteen-year-old Charlie Ovid, despite a brutal childhood in Mississippi, doesn't have a scar on him. His body heals itself, whether he wants it to or not. Marlowe, a foundling from a railway freight car, shines with a strange bluish light. He can melt or mend flesh. When a jaded female detective is recruited to escort them to safety, all three begin a journey into the nature of difference, and belonging, and the shadowy edges of the monstrous. What follows is a story of wonder and betrayal.

Absolutely amazing experience
Revisado: 04-20-24
This book, taken as an audible experience, is one of the very best I’ve ever encountered - the narrator was splendid, speaking all of the many, many characters’ voices. The story was a dark web , drawing the reader in, chapter by chapter. I would wholeheartedly recommend this book to any fan of dark fiction.

Historia
In 1893, there's no such thing as witches. There used to be, in the wild, dark days before the burnings began, but now witching is nothing but tidy charms and nursery rhymes. If the modern woman wants any measure of power, she must find it at the ballot box. But when the Eastwood sisters - James Juniper, Agnes Amaranth, and Beatrice Belladonna - join the suffragists of New Salem, they begin to pursue the forgotten words and ways that might turn the women's movement into the witch's movement.

Historia
In a sprawling mansion filled with peculiar treasures, January Scaller is a curiosity herself. As the ward of the wealthy Mr. Locke, she feels little different from the artifacts that decorate the halls: carefully maintained, largely ignored, and utterly out of place. Then she finds a strange book. A book that carries the scent of other worlds and tells a tale of secret doors, of love, adventure, and danger. Each page turn reveals impossible truths about the world, and January discovers a story increasingly entwined with her own.

Historia
In the wake of his parents’ tragic deaths in a house fire, fourteen-year-old Richard Elauved has been sent to live with his aunt and uncle in the remote, insular town of Ballantyne. Richard quickly earns a reputation as an outcast, and when a classmate named Tom goes missing, everyone suspects the angry new boy is responsible for his disappearance. No one believes him when he says the telephone booth out by the edge of the woods sucked Tom into the receiver like something out of a horror movie. No one, that is, except Karen, a beguiling fellow outsider.

Very disappointed
Revisado: 10-25-23
When I saw a “horror” book written by one of my favorite authors, I jumped at the chance to buy it. But this confused mish mash only barely qualifies as a book. The ending is a severe disappointment, and I think Mr. Nesbo would do well to stay away from any type of speculative fiction in the future.
