creates a convincing universe of flawed heroes... intelligent dialogue, plot is complicated, but the essential elements are clear.. I think I'll read everything by Don Winslow.. read about 5 so far..

Twelve friends sit down for supper at Strontfield Park, but only 11 survive the evening. After dinner, the host, William Fent, offers to drive one of his guests home, only to die behind the wheel in a violent accident. The autopsy shows that Fent ingested enough barbiturates to kill a horse. So begins a fresh tale of murder and deceit for Detective Inspector C. D. Sloan, whose list of suspects begins and ends with the surviving dinner guests.

Historia
When Dr. Philip Taiwo is called on by a powerful Nigerian politician to investigate the torture and murder of three university students in Port Harcourt, he has no idea that he’s about to be enveloped by a perilous case that is far from cold. Philip is not a detective. He’s an investigative psychologist, an academic more interested in figuring out the why of a crime than actually solving it. But when he steps off the plane and into the frenzy of the provincial airport, he soon realizes that the murder of the Okriki Three isn't as straightforward as he thought.

Nigerian American perspective
Revisado: 08-22-22
i enjoyed it enormously. not perfect but really fun for a Nigerian-American to look at his birth country through American eyes..
if this narrator stocks with this writer and if it becomes a series, please check pronunciation of Nigerian place names.. accents we're great, persona of voices we're great but every time I heard Kayno instead of Kahno I spent a few minutes being bugged..

nice enough.. i listened all the way.. but.. simple? too long by an hour? the descriptions were conventional, phrasing too..
i don't listen for the story but for the writing and this never soared.

slow start but solid story
Revisado: 12-31-21
i stopped listening after a few minutes.. came back a month later.. was it the violence that put me off, or adjusting to the reader's accent? something.. others have mentioned that..
but once you start listening, the portrait of Cuba and of the acting world in LA, and the chasm between the rich and poor in Colorado, are all so vivid that they stay with you.. you feel like you know them now, that you know something real about those worlds.. the story unfolds in a mckinty way, complicated and layered..

Historia
Retired publisher Susan Ryeland is living the good life. She is running a small hotel on a Greek island with her long-term boyfriend Andreas. It should be everything she's always wanted. But is it? She's exhausted with the responsibilities of making everything work on an island where nothing ever does, and truth be told, she's beginning to miss London. And then the Trehearnes come to stay. The strange story they tell about an unfortunate murder that took place on the same day and in the same hotel in which their daughter was married fascinates Susan and piques her editor's instincts.

starts slow.. but wins
Revisado: 12-01-21
started slow with too much setup.. but it's clever, a bit self deprecating, makes references to other crime fiction.. and the value of crime fiction.. fun.. .. .. I'm looking up more in the series right now..
