Marvelous alternative history

I enjoyed this excellent and well-researched yarn about what might have happened had the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis gotten out of control.
Steady action throughout the novel.

Well-balanced who done it
Revisado: 03-18-24
Marvelous story that blends life in a New England tourist town with mayhem, art theft and murder. The characters are engaging and well-crafted and the story hums with tension as Lewis Cole works our why a headless, handsless body has washed up near his seaside home.

Historia
As the ash and chaos from Mount Rainier’s eruption swirled and finally settled, the story of the Greenloop massacre has passed unnoticed, unexamined...until now. The journals of resident Kate Holland, recovered from the town’s bloody wreckage, capture a tale too harrowing - and too earth-shattering in its implications - to be forgotten. In this audiobook, Max Brooks brings Kate’s extraordinary account to light for the first time, faithfully reproducing her words alongside his own extensive investigations into the massacre and the legendary beasts behind it.

Joe Mandel is a perfectly ordinary guy from a perfectly ordinary town - a college student and community volunteer who dreams of one day publishing a novel. When a series of strange intuitions leads him to a crime in progress, Joe jumps headlong into danger without hesitation. In the aftermath, he wonders about the uncanny impulse that suddenly swept over him. Until new friend Portia Montclair, the strangely wise daughter of the local police chief, explains to him what sent him ricocheting around town like a crazy pinball.

Historia
Our universe is ruled by physics, and faster-than-light travel is not possible - until the discovery of The Flow, an extradimensional field we can access at certain points in space-time that transports us to other worlds, around other stars. Humanity flows away from Earth, into space, and in time forgets our home world and creates a new empire, the Interdependency, whose ethos requires that no one human outpost can survive without the others. It's a hedge against interstellar war - and a system of control for the rulers of the empire.

Fine novel and Wil Wheaton's reading is excellent
Revisado: 10-10-17
This is a fine novel. Scalzi's a creative, accessible author whose previous works linger with you long after you put aside the novel.
In this latest offering, Scalzi creates a universe much like the Holy Roman Empire where faster-than-light travel is impossible but where The Flow allows spacecraft the ability to flow though a flux to other worlds far beyond the reach of near-light speed craft. But The Flow is floundering; it is collapsing and the newly named emperox, Cardenia inherits intrigue, mystery and enemies as she confront the problems this collapse brings her tenure.
Reading the novel is Wil Wheaton and he brings the yarn to life. His is a verbal performance, and it's exemplary.
