Good historic overview
Revisado: 03-25-24
The author gives a nice historic overview of occult movements in the US, selecting main characters (so to speak) of various groups and thought systems. He nods at the fact that many of these systems are similar, gives context to the movements, and describes how they impacted larger American life through politics, literature, policy, etc. It was a great slice of the American history pie you don’t get at school.

Show is better
Revisado: 12-13-23
This is one of the rare times the show/movie is better than the book. Obviously, a lot of reviews here warned me of this point before I started listening, but they didn’t say exactly why, which is why I gave it a listen. Reasons why this book is not as good as the show:
1. The characters are flat, 1 dimensional, there to make Dexter seem interesting. Characterization is straight up lazy throughout.
2. Dexter is feeling himself too hard. The author went in on the narcissism, which is frankly boring. Any true narcissist would have known how to be charming. Plus, there were a lot of moments where Dexter mentions how hot he thinks he is. Weird. Boring. Flat.
3. Plot gets real magical at the end. Like, Dexter magically knows things because his brother whom he doesn’t know also knows those things. It feels lazy and plotty like the author got bored and wanted to get it over with. Not very procedural for what could’ve been a nice procedural, like the show.
4. The author is the voice actor, and let me tell you, I don’t think this guy knows what a woman’s voice sounds like. Plus, his attempts at accents is borderline racist. Plus, all the POC in the book are beasts and idiots instead of just people as portrayed in the show.
5. If 1-4 aren’t enough for you to put down the app and go watch the show, then maybe just listen to it? I’m not your mom. Do as you will.

Historia
Alicia Berenson’s life is seemingly perfect. A famous painter married to an in-demand fashion photographer, she lives in a grand house with big windows overlooking a park in one of London’s most desirable areas. One evening, her husband, Gabriel, returns home late from a fashion shoot, and Alicia shoots him five times in the face and then never speaks another word. Alicia’s refusal to talk, or give any kind of explanation, turns a domestic tragedy into something far grander, a mystery that captures the public imagination and casts Alicia into notoriety.

It’s a very twisty and turny book with deep characters. Voice actors are awesome and do a great job of making multiple accents.

Quadruple cross!
Revisado: 06-18-19
The story seems very straight forward at first, but it runs through so many twists and turns. Double cross leads to triple cross leads to quadruple cross?!?!?!!! (Is that possible?)

Fun Listen
Revisado: 05-10-19
If you know the Legend of Sleepy Hollow, then you probably will quickly figure out how this one will end, but it’s a fun listen. It’s not terribly scary and more of a romance book, so if you are looking for horror, look elsewhere.

Well Written

Well written ghost story. The characters are not likable, but many people aren’t. Their desperation as a driving point for the plot was palpable. No happy endings, very twisty.

Sixteen-year-old Starr Carter moves between two worlds: the poor neighborhood where she lives and the fancy suburban prep school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Khalil was unarmed. Soon afterward, his death is a national headline. Some are calling him a thug, maybe even a drug dealer and a gangbanger. Protesters are taking to the streets in Khalil’s name.

Historia
So what if it's true that Black women are mad as hell? They have the right to be. In the Black feminist tradition of Audre Lorde, Brittney Cooper reminds us that anger is a powerful source of energy that can give us the strength to keep on fighting. Far too often, Black women's anger has been caricatured into an ugly and destructive force that threatens the civility and social fabric of American democracy. But Cooper shows us that there is more to the story than that.

Good, long story
Revisado: 03-08-18
This was a good book in terms of characterization. It’s a saga, so very long. By the end, I was ready for it to be over. Great writing. The performance was excellent. I could tell who was talking by the voice inflection.
