Captivating story
Revisado: 08-08-21
I read this for a book club. At first I thought I wouldn’t enjoy the story. It seemed too much like a murder mystery at first, but a few chapters in and I was hooked. I appreciated the details of this beautifully tragic inter-generational story. As a daughter of an immigrant, a lot of Margot’s experiences reminded my of my own cultural challenges with my mom. As a parent myself, it reminded me of as children we often only see one side of our parents, not always seeing them as complete individuals with their own complicated lives.

Historia
In We Live for the We, first-time mother Dani McClain sets out to understand how to raise her daughter in what she, as a black woman, knows to be an unjust—even hostile—society. Black women are more likely to die during pregnancy or birth than any other race; black mothers must stand before television cameras telling the world that their slain children were human beings. What, then, is the best way to keep fear at bay and raise a child so she lives with dignity and joy?

Loved

I truly enjoyed this book. My oldest child was born the same year as the author’s and her struggles and thoughts mirror many of my own. It was inspiring to hear the many examples of Black motherhood.
