Historia
The Old Man and the Sea is one of Hemingway's most enduring works. Told in language of great simplicity and power, it is the story of an old Cuban fisherman, down on his luck, and his supreme ordeal, a relentless, agonizing battle with a giant marlin far out in the Gulf Stream. Here Hemingway recasts, in strikingly contemporary style, the classic theme of courage in the face of defeat, of personal triumph won from loss.

caused me to question my perception of myself
Revisado: 12-18-19
I can't understand why the other reviews are negative. This book gave me so much to think about, and I didn't find the author irritating in the least. He has a clinical tone, but that's to be expected from a psychiatrist.
I recently started on an antidepressant, and found that it made me feel better than my usual self: I have more energy, fewer worries, more fantastical dreams. This caused me to wonder if I've been depressed my whole life, or if this drug was giving me superpowers. Moreover, I wondered, what is this drug taking from me? How is my personality and sense of self entangled with my anxieties? This book doesn't have all the answers, but it certainly validated my concerns and gave me more information on the topic. Dr. Kramer seems to be wondering all the same things about the ethical implications of SSRIs, which is both deeply disturbing and endlessly thought provoking.
I would listen to this book a second time through.

Historia
Rivalry is at the heart of some of the most famous and fruitful relationships in history. The Art of Rivalry follows eight celebrated artists, each linked to a counterpart by friendship, admiration, envy, and ambition. All eight are household names today. But to achieve what they did, each needed the influence of a contemporary - one who was equally ambitious but who possessed sharply contrasting strengths and weaknesses.

My favorite book from Audible so far
Revisado: 01-03-19
I've been devouring every artist biography on Audible over the past 2 years, and this is by far my favorite. I've read separate biographies about each of the artists mentioned in this book, but reading about their rivalries and friendships with one another makes the material much more personal and memorable. love it so much

The Impossible Fortress begins with a magazine. The year is 1987, and Playboy has just published scandalous photographs of Vanna White, from the popular TV game show Wheel of Fortune. For three teenage boys - Billy, Alf, and Clark - who are desperately uneducated in the ways of women, the magazine is somewhat of a Holy Grail: priceless beyond measure and impossible to attain. So, they hatch a plan to steal it.

Lovably Predictable
Revisado: 12-01-18
The plot is a familiar boy meets girl story with a predictable conflict and resolution, but it's well written, engaging, and wonderfully performed by Griffin Newman.
Theres nothing groundbreaking about this novel, but I'm ok with that. It was cozy, comfortable, and a fun way to pass the time.

great read! I'm an artist and it is very helpful to reframe my work as /work/. Pressfield's concept of "resistance" is a great way to analyze self sabotage. I think this is one I'll be rereading again and again.

I have a bachelor's degree in fine art, so I'm very well versed in art history and Duchamp himself. I can tolerate a bit of stuffy art lingo, but this goes beyond jargon into utter nonsense. I really mean it; this book is crazytown. do not waste your money. I could not decipher even a single sentence.

Historia
All creatives are cursed. It's the subtle kind of curse. It's the kind you might not notice until you're 46 years old at a desk job wondering why you let the best years of your life slip away. It's the kind that keeps you paralyzed at 18 when you know you have something special to offer the world but everyone says you are too young.

Down to earth message. Supurb delivery!
Revisado: 08-31-17
I've listened to a few different self help books for creatives, but this one is my favorite! The advice is nothing I haven't heard before, but somehow, I never took it to heart until listening to this audio book. Todd Brison has a very conversational reading style that makes it feel like you're receiving advice from a friend or peer. He's sincere, funny, and just a tad self depricating. :) would recommend to any creative, whether you're just starting out or a jaded veteran.

worthwhile
Revisado: 05-31-17
This was an informative read. Nothing blew my skirt up, but Carey has some level-headed points. Its always nice to hear a fine art career broken down into steps, just like any other career. It takes long hours and persistence to make money, and even more persistence if your product is as ephemeral as "hugging a stranger" like Carey and his wife. It's honestly amazing that he can make a living doing performance art, but apparently if you follow his advice, you could have a chance too.
