This is the best lecturer I have found in the Great Courses series. He makes battles come alive, and I am not usually interested in military history! It is about the military movements of the Americans and the British, but there is a bit of political and personal history involved to give it some flavor. I found it to have good details, but it is like any freshmen course; it glosses over a great deal, and it ignores much of the sticky issues. But, if you don't know much about the war (other then what you got in high school which in itself was very wrong) this is a good start.

Nice Gloss Over of the Story

This is a nice overview of a very specific time in English and Norman history. It does not go into as much detail as I had hoped, or really offer much perspective. It was more like a history lesson from high school then any of the in depth analysis done in college. But, it was nice to listen to on my drive. The audio is scratchy in patches, but still clear, the reader has a strong voice.

Would you try another book from Lynsay Sands and/or Sarah Coomes?

Maybe the author, but most definitely NOT the reader. She was extremely annoying: girlish, nasal, and shrill.

Would you ever listen to anything by Lynsay Sands again?

Maybe. I admit there were some funny parts, but the sex scenes were ridiculously overblown, and the farce wasn't that great.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Sarah Coomes?

I don't know, but most definitely not her.

Do you think The Countess needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

No.

Any additional comments?

I thought it was funnier the first time I listened to it. I just finished listening to it for the second time and I could barely finish it. It was just terrible. Maybe I blocked out the bad parts last time :)

Would you try another book from Karen Witemeyer and/or Pilar Witherspoon?

NO

What could Karen Witemeyer have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Made the heroine an interesting and real person. She was either ridiculously timid or out of her mind stupid. She was as flat as a pancake. It is books like this that give inspirational romance a bad name.

What three words best describe Pilar Witherspoon’s voice?

slow, bland, and uninteresting

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Short-Straw Bride?

All of the last third.

Any additional comments?

Woman can be religious and still be a smart and strong person, but apparently not in this book.

Better than expected

If you are like me, you are thinking of this book because you loved "Something Borrowed" and want to see what happens to the characters. Know that this book delivers. You have to wade through more than half of it before you get to anything remotely good (the first have is a rehashing of the first book from Darcy's perspective), but the second half is more than worth it. You get to see Darcy slowly transform from a whiny, annoying, one-note character into one that you eventually like. You fall in love with Ethan. And you get to explore London! You also get a resolution to a lot of the storylines left unfinished from the first book. I was happy to see an ending for Dex and Rachel as well. If you enjoyed the first one, this one is worth it, just stick through the first half, trust me.

Love It!

This book was written for anyone who loves libraries, librarians, and looking towards the future in the field. It was an exciting look at current trends, and the information culture. As a future librarian, this book helped to reinforce the absolute need of information, and the continuing need of librarians with a diverse technological background.

I especially liked the chapter on librarian blogs, and the detailed looks at sample libraries within the overarching theme of the book. The narration was great too! This is not too technical a book, and can be enjoyed by anyone with an interest. Meaning it is not just for librarians, it is for anyone who wants to know how we still need libraries, and how we always will.

Not as good as the rest of the series

I love this series, don't get me wrong, but this book was weak and lacking. The storyline was barely advanced from the last book. The remaining mysteries are not enough to make me excited for the next one. The characters are little changed, or advanced, from the last book, and the secondary characters were used effectually.

I guess I was just looking forward to this book so much, that I was bound to be disappointed. But, I know that this book could have been better. As always, the narrated was superb. I just wish that the book was as good as the rest of the series.

Great story, made better by audio!

This one of the best voice actors I have ever heard. She is not just an audio reader, but an actress, as she does all the voices, and includes the best drama in it. The story just keeps getting better with each installment. The second a bit slow, but the third more than makes up for it. If you have the chance to listen to this adventure story, you wont regret it.

Read it in book format

Sometimes you love a book, and an audio version can make it even better. This isn't one of those times. The story is alright, vintage SEP, but with the death of her usual fabulous reader, Glitter Baby, tries out a new one. The new reader is too young and her valley girl accent is grating. Read it on paper, rather than audio, it is not worth the price difference.

Get voice

I appreciate this Charlaine Harris' series, it is fun, consistent in the level of quality throughout, and this one in particular has good plot development. But, this series is better on audio than in book. I listen to a lot of audio books, and I have never (with the exception of his holiness Jim Dale) heard a better voice actor. Not only does her voice fit the story, but she is emotional yet soothing. Get this series on audio, despite the costs, its worth it.
