Historia
Five-year-old Milad Salama is excited for a school trip to a theme park on the outskirts of Jerusalem. On the way, his bus collides with a semitrailer. His father, Abed, gets word of the crash and rushes to the site. The scene is chaos—the children have been taken to different hospitals in Jerusalem and the West Bank; some are missing, others cannot be identified. Abed sets off on an odyssey to learn Milad’s fate. It is every parent’s worst nightmare, but for Abed it is compounded by the maze of physical, emotional, and bureaucratic obstacles he must navigate because he is Palestinian.

Historia
In 1981, Jack Welch took over General Electric and quickly rose to fame as the first celebrity CEO. He golfed with presidents, mingled with movie stars, and was idolized for growing GE into the most valuable company in the world. But Welch’s achievements didn’t stem from some greater intelligence or business prowess. Rather, they were the result of a sustained effort to push GE’s stock price ever higher, often at the expense of workers, consumers, and innovation.

Why planes fall from the sky and much more
Revisado: 03-16-24
The books explains how Jack Welch and his proteges drove great U.S. companies into the ground by sacrificing innovation and quality for high quarterly earnings by financial chicanery and downsizing. The writing is exceptionally good and very well-suited for listening - it is concise in words and in numbers. (Long sets of numbers are the dearth of audio books IMHO). The narration was spot-on for the text. The books highlights how the downfall of Boeing , the increase in income inequality and the de-industrialization of the U.S. are linked. One of the most interesting and very best books I've read in the last 5 years. Very highly recommended.

Historia
Fights about the fate of the state of Israel, and the Zionist movement that gave birth to it, have long been a staple of both Jewish and American political culture. But despite these arguments' significance to American politics, American Jewish life, and to Israel itself, no one has ever systematically examined their history and explained why they matter. In We Are Not One, historian Eric Alterman traces this debate from its nineteenth-century origins.

Key insights about the U.S. Israel Relationship
Revisado: 12-20-23
This is a particularly important book given the present conflict in Gaza and if you think the U.S. support for Israel should be reconsidered, this books should be required reading. Since 10/7, I've been reading a number of histories of the conflict between Israelis and Palestinians including works by Benny Morris, Ilan Pappe, Avi Shlaim and Rashid Khalidi which have greatly broadened my understanding of the conflict. However, none of these works have deeply considered the key role that the U.S. has played in the support of Israel. "We are not one" provides a generally even-handed view of the internal U.S. politics responsible for the "special relationship" U.S. has with Israel. Both AIPAC and the B.D.S. movement are critically scrutinized. I learned a great deal about how the Right Wing Israeli Governments are much more aligned with Christian Zionists than with mainstream American Jewry. The writing is highly engaging and the narration is clear.

Historia
Breathless is story of SARs-CoV-2 and its fierce journey through the human population, as seen by the scientists who study its origin, its ever-changing nature, and its capacity to kill us. David Quammen expertly shows how strange new viruses emerge from animals into humans as we disrupt wild ecosystems and how those viruses adapt to their human hosts, sometimes causing global catastrophe. He explains why this coronavirus will probably be a “forever virus,” destined to circulate among humans and bedevil us endlessly, in one variant form or another.

Highly informed and well-written Covid Narrative
Revisado: 10-12-23
Because of his earlier work on the spillover of viruses from the wild into humans, Quammen is superbly qualified and connected to explain how scientists addressed the Covid pandemic. My only gripe is that he doesn’t understand the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle and wish he hadn’t brought it up at the end.

Historia
Donald Trump will be president again, whether he is on the ballot or not. That is because Trumpism is overtaking the Republican Party and will mount a vigorous comeback, potentially in the hands of a savvier successor. This prophecy will come true, according to Miles Taylor, if we do not learn the lessons of the recent past. With the 2024 election approaching, the formerly “Anonymous” official is back with bombshell revelations and a sobering national forecast. Taylor predicts what could happen inside “Trump 2.0,” the White House of a more competent and more formidable copycat.

Historia
Known for his brilliant songwriting, his extraordinary guitar playing, and his haunting and lovely songs, Richard Thompson has garnered a longtime cult following and is considered one of the top 20 guitarists of all time by Rolling Stone. Now, in his first memoir, he lyrically chronicles the start of his legendary career. Thompson packed more than a lifetime of experiences into his late teens and 20s. From the pivotal years of 1967 to 1975, he matured into a major musician, establishing the genre of British folk rock with the era-defining band Fairport Convention....

A must read for afficionados of British Folk Rock
Revisado: 12-18-21
Richard Thompson is a musician's musician as both an exceptional guitarist and song writer. He is also a compelling story teller about his early days rousting about in the folk rock scene in Britain. I wish it could have been a words and music production though, particularly as Richard narrates the story so well. Lots of great stuff about Fairport Convention but unfortunately less about Linda Thompson. The story evokes, without pretension, the life of naive purist who is on a quest to understand the meaning of life and how to find his own originality as a musician. I look greatly forward to the next book, hopefully with a bit music.

In this moving, immersive, and long-awaited memoir, beloved international music legend Richard Thompson recreates the spirit of his early years, where he found, and then lost, and then found his way again. Considered one of the top twenty guitarists of all time, Thompson also belongs in the songwriting pantheon alongside Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, and Randy Newman. Honest, moving, and compelling, Beeswing vividly captures the life of a remarkable man and musician during a period of artistic intensity, in a world on the cusp of change.

Historia
On the first Sunday in December 1941, an armada of Japanese warplanes appeared suddenly over Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, and devastated the U.S. Pacific Fleet. Six months later, in a sea fight north of the tiny atoll of Midway, four Japanese aircraft carriers were sent into the abyss. Pacific Crucible tells the epic tale of these first searing months of the Pacific war, when the U.S. Navy shook off the worst defeat in American military history and seized the strategic initiative.

Revisado: 02-09-21
This is first book I've read by Ian Toll and I found the writing exceptionally vivid, particularly with Grover Gardner's narration. I am enthusiastically looking forward to reading the following books in this trilogy, much in the same fashion as I had with Robert Caro's masterful 3 volume (and hopefully 4 volume) biography of LBJ.

Set adrift by his pirate crew, Pocket of Dog Snogging - last seen in The Serpent of Venice - washes up on the sun-bleached shores of Greece, where he hopes to dazzle the Duke with his comedic brilliance and become his trusted fool. But the island is in turmoil. Egeus, the Duke’s minister, is furious that his daughter Hermia is determined to marry Demetrius, instead of Lysander, the man he has chosen for her. The Duke decrees that if, by the time of the wedding, Hermia still refuses to marry Lysander, she shall be executed...or consigned to a nunnery.

Silly romp written and narrated by genius
Revisado: 11-23-20
I'd strongly suggest starting with the first book of the Fool series by Christopher Moore to become accustomed to the conceits of the Fool character. All the books in the Fool series are laugh out loud funny, as if they were written and performed by a version of Monty Python whom all had taken first in classics at Oxford. The enthusiasm that Euan Morton narrates suggests that he paid a goodly sum to be narrator - it's evident that he had a great time in narration, as do the audience. Great fun!

Woodward, the number-one international bestselling author of Fear: Trump in the White House, has uncovered the precise moment the president was warned that the Covid-19 epidemic would be the biggest national security threat to his presidency. In dramatic detail, Woodward takes readers into the Oval Office as Trump’s head pops up when he is told in January 2020 that the pandemic could reach the scale of the 1918 Spanish Flu that killed 675,000 Americans.

Piercing insights into a deeply flawed President
Revisado: 10-11-20
Woodward makes a very clear case about why Trump is the wrong man for the job of president. But this book is not a polemic or a hit piece on Trump. It's a carefully written description of Woodward's attempts to understand what drives Trump's chaotic manner of decision making. The narration is superb and you might imagine being at a Mamet play when you hear the dialogue with Trump. Woodward generally steered clear of the rank corruption of Trump Inc. though.
