Historia
Written during the early months of lockdown, Intimations explores ideas and questions prompted by an unprecedented situation. What does it mean to submit to a new reality - or to resist it? How do we compare relative sufferings? What is the relationship between time and work? In our isolation, what do other people mean to us? How do we think about them? What is the ratio of contempt to compassion in a crisis? When an unfamiliar world arrives, what does it reveal about the world that came before it?

Brilliant, exhilarating, candid, self-aware, warm, gently humorous, and ultimately devastating. Read it before anything else on your list.

Historia
Sethe was born a slave and escaped to Ohio, but eighteen years later she is still not free. Sethe has too many memories of Sweet Home, the beautiful farm where so many hideous things happened. And Sethe’s new home is haunted by the ghost of her baby, who died nameless and whose tombstone is engraved with a single word: Beloved.

A masterpiece obscured by Morrison's narration.
Revisado: 12-07-19
This is one of the literary greats of the 20th century. It has all the complexity and depth of a modern masterwork and yet it is conveyed in the form and dialect of a folktale. Each character's thought process is independently represented in a unique style, and Morrison's use of time and structure is seamless and bewitching, even as it may sometimes be bedeviling. The spellbinding storytelling accounts for the book's exalted standing in American literature, but also the confusion and negativity expressed by some readers. I read the book in sections after listening to parts of the audiobook. That is because Morrison's narration is on the whole distracting. Parts of words are frequently dropped at the end of a sentence or phrase, and her phrasing, which in some cases might be considered poetic, interferes with the listeners grasp of what is being stated. My recommendation is to read the book, which will doubtlessly take much less time (Morrison's narration is also painfully slow-paced in a sotto voce that betrays a history as a smoker ) and prove to be more enjoyable than listening to the audiobook.
