Historia
Walter Lippmann's Public Opinion (1922) argues humans can't fully grasp complex issues. We rely on simplified ideas (stereotypes) and media portrayals ("pseudo-environments") to form opinions.

Lippmann is an impressive social scientist.
Revisado: 12-29-24
I had heard of Lippmann as a journalist, but didn’t know what an excellent thinker and observer he was. I recommend the book highly. The one distraction is the poor ability of the narrator to read English. His voice and style of reading are fine, but he mispronounces words all over the place and sometimes makes substitutions that are initially very confusing (e.g., “casualty” for “causality” and “mortality” for “morality,” among many others). That such errors end up in the final version is more the fault of the editors than of the reader, but the result is still disconcerting. Still very much worth the listen though.

Poorly edited but still worth it.
Revisado: 12-11-22
James Baldwin is unparalleled as an intellect and an interpreter of American society. He ranks with the prophets of old. This audiobook is poorly edited and repetitive, but I listened to the repetitions in their entirety because it doesn’t hurt to hear James Baldwin repeat himself (and it is his very voice that we hear), but other listeners might be put off by the repetition. Still, I can confidently recommend this audiobook to all.

Historia
The groundbreaking trans-genre work of Argentinian writer Jorge Luis Borges (1899-1986) has been insinuating itself into the structure, stance, and very breath of world literature for well over half a century. Multi-layered, self-referential, elusive, and allusive writing is now frequently labelled Borgesian.

Poor editing
Revisado: 10-20-22
This is a very nice introduction to Borges. The narrator speaks clearly and in a good tempo, but his myriad mispronunciations are distracting and disconcerting. He mispronounces nearly every foreign name and messes up a fair number of English words as well. I don’t blame the narrator as much as the editor—all the mispronunciations could easily have been avoided by recourse to a dictionary or the internet. I still would recommend the audiobook, but I must decry the many avoidable errors.

Historia
Julius Caesar wrote his exciting Commentaries during some of the most grueling campaigns ever undertaken by a Roman army. The Gallic Wars and The Civil Wars constitute the greatest series of military dispatches ever written. As literature, they are representative of the finest expressions of Latin prose in its "golden" age, a benchmark of elegant style and masculine brevity imitated by young schoolboys for centuries.

Charlton Griffin has a wonderful voice and is in most respects an excellent reader, but he mispronounces a large fraction of the Latin names and titles. I fault the editor for that. The mispronunciations are disconcerting and can easily be avoided. Otherwise: great book, great listen!

Historia
In They Don’t Represent Us, Harvard law professor Lawrence Lessig charts the way in which the fundamental institutions of our democracy, including our media, respond to narrow interests rather than to the needs and wishes of the nation’s citizenry. But the blame does not only lie with “them” - Washington’s politicians and power brokers, Lessig argues. The problem is also “us.”

Best of its genre.
Revisado: 06-25-20
I rarely write reviews, but I’m compelled to let as many as I can know that this book by a first-class mind is sure to enlighten anyone concerned about the state of America’s ability to govern itself. The book is nuanced, fair, and deeply insightful. Lessig outlines what is causing the lack of representation at the federal level, and what could be done about it. I don’t usually agree with everything a non-fiction author has to say (the last time was E.O. Wilson’s Consilience), but I did here—even when it didn’t entirely comport with what my tribe might like. I learned an awful lot from Lessig. He’s a great teacher and reads the book himself. Don’t pass up a golden opportunity to expand your understanding of an important topic in the most pleasant way.

Historia
Our current climate of partisan fury is not new, and in The Soul of America Meacham shows us how what Abraham Lincoln called the “better angels of our nature” have repeatedly won the day. Painting surprising portraits of Lincoln and other presidents, including Ulysses S. Grant, Theodore Roosevelt, and LBJ, and illuminating the courage of influential citizen activists and civil rights pioneers, Meacham brings vividly to life turning points in American history. Each of these dramatic hours have been shaped by the contest to lead the country to look forward rather than back.

Excellent history of Rome.
Revisado: 09-05-19
This is one of the best histories of Rome I've read, and I recommend it heartily. I do have a gripe with the producers because the narrator mispronounces several Latin names and words--ironically both "senatus" and "populusque"! But she mispronounces Caracalla and Josephus over and over, which was annoying--and so easily corrected, which is why I blame the producers more than the narrator, who is otherwise a pleasure to listen to. Ms. Beard stresses the importance of maintaining our dialogue with the ancient Romans, from whom we in the West have inherited so many of our ideas on politics, law, literature, and beauty. I agree with her and recommend her S.P.Q.R. as a thoroughly enjoyable way to do just that.

Historia
One of Jane Austen’s most beloved works, Pride and Prejudice, is vividly brought to life by Academy Award nominee Rosamund Pike ( Gone Girl). In her bright and energetic performance of this British classic, she expertly captures Austen’s signature wit and tone. Her attention to detail, her literary background, and her performance in the 2005 feature film version of the novel provide the perfect foundation from which to convey the story of Elizabeth Bennet, her four sisters, and the inimitable Mr. Darcy.
