Nice light read, and not nearly as provocative as one might expect from this title.
Revisado: 02-17-25
Peggy Rowe has an amazing voice and energy. A feel good book. Easy listening. The content is a little slow, and not high on plots. But really nice. (I am probably just too accustomed to reading darker grittier nonfiction.)

Historia
Back on Earth with nothing more to show for his long, strange trip through time and space than a ratty towel and a plastic shopping bag, Arthur Dent is ready to believe that the past eight years were all just a figment of his stressed-out imagination. But a gift-wrapped fishbowl with a cryptic inscription, the mysterious disappearance of Earth’s dolphins, and the discovery of his battered copy of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy all conspire to give Arthur the sneaking suspicion that something otherworldly is indeed going on.

Historia
Talking about death and dying is considered taboo in polite company, and even in the medical field. Our ideas about dying are confusing at best: Will our memories flash before our eyes? Regrets consume our thoughts? Does a bright light appear at the end of a tunnel? For most people, it will be a slower process, one eased with preparedness, good humor, and a bit of faith. At the forefront of changing attitudes around palliative care is hospice nurse Hadley Vlahos, who shows that end-of-life care can teach us just as much about how to live as it does about how we die.

Yes, get it. I'm SO happy I made this purchase.
Revisado: 06-17-24
Touching, compelling. Hadley's voice is lovely. The story is well crafted, written, and edited.
Some will want to know that it's not very graphic at all, even though it deals with illness and death.
Also, it's uplifting, but not religious or preachy, IMO.
Could have been MUCH longer and I'd have loved every minute of it. I hope Hadley writes more in future.

what a tired voice
Revisado: 10-11-23
A few years ago, the first few chapters of this book changed my life. Since I don't have time to sit and read, I thought the audiobook would be a good option. However, Melody's voice is so hard to listen to, because she sounds so tired and maybe vocal cords damaged? On some chapters it sounded like she was just about at the end of her voice. I found it so distracting that I stopped listening to the book three quarters of the way through because I wasn't picking up on any of its content the whole time. I've been forcing myself to do a chapter a day but got nothing out of it. I guess I'm going to have to get the print copy at some point unless I can find a different reader. Usually I love things read by the author. It's just more genuine. The content of his book itself is incredible though.

weird but interesting ... but becomes tedious.
Revisado: 09-27-23
This is an adult reviewing a YA book, so this review is skewed. interesting concept. Chapter one was so very strange, but definitely intriguing. Gave up halfway through the book when it turned into neverending chapter after chapter of fighting off various mythical creatures, but without sufficiently interesting main characters to make it worth the fight. I started skipping chapters, and I am not that curious to know how this ends. In that way, it is very much like reading the Odyssey.
The writing is very clear and everything is explained concisely.
The narrator is very talented. The voice she chose for the main character who tells it in first person is annoying, but the main character is a teenage girl.
I think I would have gotten bogged down at about the same place if I were a teen. Just like I did reading the Odyssey.

5 stars (from this very critical person)
Revisado: 09-04-23
It was so much more than I expected. I expected just stories, biographies. I needed to hear their projection of forgiveness as a lifestyle. The world needs this book. I love it and will be re-reading it. What a lovely, practical application of the Bible.
It may be a bit heavy for some, and maybe not suitable for very young folks, as its subject matter and stories are difficult (violence, abuse, sexual abuse, abortion, infidelity, suicide, drug use, etc.)
The performance: at first, I was unhappy that the narrators were kind of sing-songy, but it turned out that it kept the serious, darker realities from getting depressing. Thumbs up.
