Historia
Leovander Loveage is a master of small magics. He can summon butterflies with a song or turn someone’s hair pink by snapping his fingers. Though such minor charms don’t earn him much respect, anything more elaborate always blows up in his face, and so Leo vowed long ago never to use powerful magic again. That is, until a mishap with a forbidden spell binds Leo to obey the commands of his longtime rival, Sebastian Grimm. Grimm is Leo’s complete opposite—respected, exceptionally talented, and absolutely insufferable.

The most unusual book
Revisado: 10-23-24
I confess that at first I found it odd. I was unsure. But the story, the characters, the world in which they live, the magic and sorcery which they practice, in a society where those practices are not forbidden but instead are encouraged, indeed. a major part of the fabric of their lives, was compelling. Now that I am done with the book, I'm hoping for a sequel. Though it does not end in a cliffhanger, the hint of more to come is present. Thank you, Chell, for showing me your copy and telling me the author is a friend of yours!

Historia
In the ancient city of Nineveh, on the bank of the River Tigris, King Ashurbanipal of Mesopotamia, erudite but ruthless, built a great library that would crumble with the end of his reign. From its ruins, however, emerged a poem, the Epic of Gilgamesh, that would infuse the existence of two rivers and bind together three lives. In 1840 London, Arthur is born beside the stinking, sewage-filled River Thames. With an abusive, alcoholic father and a mentally ill mother, Arthur’s only chance of escaping destitution is his brilliant memory.

Historia
On the morning of August 12, 2022, Salman Rushdie was standing onstage at the Chautauqua Institution, preparing to give a lecture on the importance of keeping writers safe from harm, when a man in black—black clothes, black mask—rushed down the aisle toward him, wielding a knife. His first thought: So it’s you. Here you are. What followed was a horrific act of violence that shook the literary world and beyond.

Rushdie's will to live
Revisado: 04-21-24
I experienced a gamut of emotions that none of the conflicting newsflashes at the time of the attack managed to illicit, aside from shock and horror.
Rushdie's honesty in the telling of his ordeal, the pain he endured during treatment , the love and support of his wife and family, even his imagined conversations with his assailant, had me sometimes weeping, sometimes raging. and yes, even sometimes laughing . I just finished listening, so still in the throes of the narrative; it is brilliant.

JD KIRK HAS A SENSE OF HUMOUR!
Revisado: 02-02-23
This is not to say that a heinous crime is not committed, nor that the story lacks angst for the human condition, something Kirk never lets us forget. But this book affords us respite from the horror and sadness with the mad antics of some characters, and allows to laugh or chuckle. In retrospect, this being the 5th book I read in succession, Kirk serves up a gourmet dish each time, seasoning with all the flavors and textures: salty, sour, hot and spicy, sweet and bitter, crisp and crunchy, soft and smooth; all perfectly balanced.

Historia
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

Brilliant Book!
Revisado: 02-12-21
Started it last night and did not let myself fall asleep until the story ended. 5am? Spellbinding, horrifying, moving, riveting....Well crafted, suspenseful but not to the degree a thriller might be so, for me, perfectly balanced. A page-turner to the last.
I am off to search for more Kelli Estes works!

Revisado: 02-11-21
Not much I can say except that I did not like this book at all. Could not follow it or make sense of it and just was not willing to listen to it to the end. The narrator was not unpleasant to listen to, but he did not make it any easier to follow or understand the book.
