Really well written story. Complex world building and great pacing make for a really interesting story. MC has a lot of character and plot points are well thought out and form a coherent well told plot. Bravo. Where’s book 3???

Historia
It has been two years since the Shift - when most technology stopped working, and the laws of physics changed. Humanity has been brought to its knees. Like other survivors, Noah Henson has heard rumors of the Aelves. Among other guesses, predatory aliens seem as good as any other theory for what caused the Shift. But for Noah, everything else takes second place to survival, sometimes even self-respect... or any sort of decency. Lawless, post-apocalypse America had forced Noah to make many difficult decisions, and he has never seemed to choose correctly.

Fun but a little slow
Revisado: 01-23-24
So, I like these kind of stories where….<SPOILER> hero gets a second chance with future knowledge to save people in an apocalypse <SPOILER>.
That being said this story ramps up really slowly… to the extent almost the whole book seems like prologue. I’m hoping there’s some heavy payoff in book 2.
The MC I think is a bit too noble for my taste… he’s got emotional baggage but he just comes off a little flat.

Good but Not My Favorite Dakota Krout Book
Revisado: 01-10-24
Dakota Krout is one of my favorite authors. The narrator does a good job on this one but I think Luke Daniel’s might have done a better job accentuating some of the more comedic elements of the story.
Overall, this book reads a bit too much like a fairly conventional post apocalypse Litrpg story than I prefer... however I’ve never seen the main character as a cook class and the MCs perk also helps keep the story fresh.
I’m hoping we see more evolution in the MCs cooking class in the next two books so the story can stand out more from the more conventional Litrpg mechanics that are generally starting to get a bit dull.
That being said, the main characters are likable and there’s a good dash of humor and puns that have kept it enjoyable so far. I’d say this is also great for young readers as it keeps the language toned down more than adult focused apocalypse stories (yes, I’m talking about you Dungeon Crawler Carl). I think I’d give 4.5 stars if it were an option.
If you’re new to Dakota Krout consider checking out his very entertaining Divine Dungeon series first. The Competionist Chronicles and Full Murder Hobo series are also very entertaining.

Historia
Joe the Ritualist fled Alfheim with the remnants of the Dwarven Oligarchy at his side. Though the hairy warriors number in the tens of thousands, they stand at the brink of extinction; and the new world they landed on isn’t pulling any punches. Jotunheim is a winter wonderland featuring a vast array of monsters: the least of which are hulking lizard-ape Hoardlings, and carnivorous penguins standing a dozen feet tall.

Better Viewed as Part 1 of a Trilogy (books 9-11)
Revisado: 01-05-24
I feel like this book got a bit of a bad wrap. My guess is that Dakota wrote this one along with books 10 and 11 as one and split it into 3 because that's most often how authors monetize their work these days. While I'm not a fan of this dicing up a story in this way, if you look at books 9-11 as a coherent story then I feel comfortable giving it a four and a half or five star rating.
I do agree with some of the other reviewers that the gruff and grumpy dwarves are getting a bit overdone in this series... however, slight spoiler here ****** it looks like the dwarven society is mostly going out of the picture in book 12 *******. The general flow of the series has had one or two races per realm... I think carrying the dwarves over to the next realm was a bit borderline lazy on Dakota's part but it did make sense in light of how the story was going.... just think he didn't think out how tiresome the grumpy dwarf thing would get after spending six books focused on them.
I think what some people don't get is that Joe is NOT a people person and so his low charisma score constantly gets him into trouble... both with the humans in the first 5 books and with the dwarves in the most recent 6 books. I think the human on human interaction is inherently more interesting and easy because they have a common ancestry and background... whereas with the dwarves and elves Dakota has to make everything up and people just end up missing each other's point entirely, which makes for a less interesting plotline.

Not as Good as Main Series
Revisado: 01-05-24
I got this because of the reduced bundle cost even though the reviews seemed middling.
Vocal Performance
Andreas Parsneau does her typical excellent performance but the male voice actor addition really stole some of her normal magic. The Male voice actor sounds authentically Australian but just has no vocal range… which is jarring given how strong the range of voices Andreas provides. Every character he portrays has almost exactly the same vocal intonation.
Story
The story follows mostly the same rules as the main series but as others mentioned she comes across pretty whiny and the constant navel-staring by the MC is somewhat understandable but ultimately feels like filler after awhile… story would be much more enjoyable if this were pared back.
I think the MC is also not terribly believable as a leader. Slight spoilers ahead******** The MC is originally a research scientist who has a class that is supposedly powerful but ultimately a strong precognition/support role based on sensing mana. The book keeps saying how powerful her class is but it doesn’t feel like there’s ever much of a payoff with her class progression.***** The MC is also an emotional wreck most of the time and absorbed in her own world of worrying about her kids… so it seems odd that a large community would identify her as the leader of a group of thousands of survivors.
There’s also a bit of DEI pushing in this series. I think the most ridiculous DEI bit of the story is where the MC during one of her numerous navel staring sessions bemoans the fact that her settlement has "wealth equality discrimination"... during an apocalypse... as she buys all the best gear and a large home for herself and her kids. The MC is also portrayed as probably bisexual and there’s another character constantly referred to as “they” who has almost no dialog and is just constantly referred to as being a good cleric. It’s not too over the top but something parents might want to be aware of. For me it just seems like DEI is something authors think they have to include or they'll get dinged for it.
I’m not returning the book but also not giving this a strong recommendation. Given you get three audiobooks for 1 credit it’s not a bad deal especially if you’re interested in and enjoy the other system apocalypse books.
If you liked the main series and are looking for more I think the system apocalypse relentless series is better and closer to the original series than this one.

His Class and very appearance shift at random. Just ok
Revisado: 10-18-23
I really liked Sean's Life in Exile series. This book I did manage to get through but just barely. The main character is extremely overpowered to the point where it's hard to stay engaged in the story. He has a class trait that causes him to shift between classes without control over his shifts... but none of his class shifts make him very vulnerable because his class level is so high. If his different classes each had a random class level assigned it might be more exciting but as it is he seems to roll over all his obstacles without much in the way of problems.
Maybe the next couple books will put better obstacles in the MC's path or make it seem like he's truly in some level of danger at failing at.. anything... but I'm not interested enough in the story to continue. Oh, the narration is also a miss here. Not sure if the author asked the narrator to voice the narrator in an overly dramatic way but it makes the over powered nature of the MC even more annoying while reading the book. Nuff said. Maybe try it if you're having a hard time finding anything else.

Historia
A teenage mage of humble birth and slightly above-average skill, Zorian is attending his third year of education at Cyoria's magical academy. A driven and quiet young man, he is consumed by a desire to ensure his own future and free himself of the influence of his family, resenting the Kazinskis for favoring his brothers over him. Consequently, Zorian has no time for pointless distractions, much less other people's problems.

Tons of Fun and Great Narration
Revisado: 08-30-23
I almost didn’t pick this book up due to numerous comments about issues with the narration. I think that some people don’t appreciate the MC’s sister’s voice since she jumps on the MC at the beginning of every time loop and tells him to get up in a somewhat shrill voice. While the voice is a bit grating, it’s by design and adds to the realism of the vocal performance. If you hate that part just fast forward when the narrator states he feels a pain on his chest.
As far as the story goes it has tons of good and likable characters. The only reason I docked the story by a star is that I felt the story was a bit sprawling sometimes and some of the subplots weren’t terribly interesting and ultimately a little irrelevant to the overall plot of the story…. I think this is typical in books written as web serials as this one was. All that said it was a very satisfying story and I’m pretty bummed that the author doesn’t have any additional books published.

What a Fun Progression Story
Revisado: 12-19-22
I’d previously read this author’s blessed time books which I also enjoyed. This isn’t a particularly intellectual read but it’s a lot of fun with a plucky hero, interesting magic mechanics and plenty of humor to go around. Neil Hellegers voice narration is great as usual.

But when he logs in, he soon finds out that he won’t be diving the dungeon - he will be creating it. Pretty awesome right? At least that was what he thought when he boldly chose "Random" as his dungeon type....

Strong Start Didn’t go Anywhere
Revisado: 09-21-22
The book’s ok and I did listen to most of it. Dozed through some of the middle chapters. It does have some fun pop culture references going back to the 80s and 90s… but it’s a bit odd since the story’s supposed to be set in the 2040s.
I think the problem is the MC is detached from his dungeon crawlers too much. In the Seminole Divine Dungeon series by Dakota Krout, the dungeon has a more interesting (i.e. crazy) personality and doesn’t always make logical well thought out decisions which is part of what makes this book a bit of a snooze fest sometimes. Divine Dungeon also puts the dungeon core in real danger from the crawlers at times, which never happens in this book.
While I won’t continue with the series hopefully the dungeon vs dungeon interaction will make the story a little more interesting for more patient readers so there’s some actual suspense introduced.
No issues with Travis Bauldree narration.
