One of the best science fiction novels I've ever read, encompassing anthropology, psychology, sociology and the dangers of applying anthropocentric thinking to alien lives: we see early on that the humans are underestimating native intelligence, and that thread is followed past several inevitable train wrecks to a beautifully original conclusion.

Harkaway's gonzo sci-fi can be daunting; here he balances his P.K. Dick surreal lunacy with a storyline that follows a more straightforward track than most, blending deluberate Marvel, DC, and gaming influences with a legally invisible island perched on a caldera of impending ecological disaster, haven of Byzantine intrigues. What can save the day but a superhero? A reluctant post-colonial administrator and an imaginative, resourceful street kid create a plan that probably only Harkaway could craft into an honest story that would move me, at various times, to both laughter and tears.

The secret love child of Philip K. Dick, Tom Wolfe, and R.A. Lafferty, trained in spookthink by LeCarré and in close-quarters combat by some fine sensei, Hardaway produces another lunatic masterpiece of suspense-horror-romcom-doomsday-action.
Despite fine handling of all the characters, alas, Weyman's reading inserts extended pauses at points that often leave the listener thinking it's the end of a chapter. This leads to a lot of frustrating demi-suspense in dialogue. That said, I'm not sorry I listened, and I'll listen to it again.

This book covers a lot of ground. A well-paced, well- plotted intrigue that blends body-disposal comedy, comedy of mixed messages, gender rôle and homophobia satire, military intelligence ops gone askew, and space station operations, all with well-scripted and well-rounded characters. Gardner's reading of both narration and characters, as ever, is top-notch.

This old favourite is a go-to 'listen' for me if I'm doing housework or other tasks not demanding complete attention. Although the reading is ...unexciting, still, the ancient rhythms, kennings, and alliteration are a delight to the ear.

This is probably the most intelligently constructed view of a culture in the clumsy process of discovering parallel universes that I've ever run across, and I'm a longtime fan of well-done parallel universe tales. Snappy dialogue, solid characters, internal consistency, and an impressive sense of plot and pacing elevate the Threshold books well above genre norms.

Witty, solid characterizations, story well developed and well thought out, great dialogue, and DEPRESSING AS HELL: must be real literature. It's a genuinely good book, but I won't be reading it again!

Brilliant, challenging book, with well-drawn and oddly credible characters in an incredible situation, this apocalyptic tale is almost one huge spoiler.

A pretty decent reading is spoiled buy hope days inability to pronounce some terms and names vital to the story, such as Shiva - which Vidal presumably spelled Siva, but is *not* pronounced Sivva; and terms in French, which Day renders like... someone who's boned up half-heartedly prepping for the rôle of a fluent speaker is the language.

A final blister of antisematism in the last chapter here mars an otherwise splendid work of both prose and verse - some of Kipling's finest.
