A diary, written in 1912 by a Lutheran Pastor is discovered within a wall. What it unveils is a slow massacre, a chain of events that go back to 217 Blackfeet dead in the snow. Told in transcribed interviews by a Blackfeet named Good Stab, who shares the narrative of his peculiar life over a series of confessional visits. This is an American Indian revenge story written by one of the new masters of horror, Stephen Graham Jones.

Another interesting twist on vampire stories.

This is one of those “slow burns”. I enjoyed it. Pays out a little throughout the book rather than one big payout at the end.

Characters were very likable and funny. Story is a little preachy and anti- intellectual, but if you are looking for a thriller that will leave you smiling this is it.

Historia
On his last combat deployment, Lt. Cmdr. James Reece's entire team was killed in an ambush that also claimed the lives of the aircrew sent in to rescue them. But when those dearest to him are murdered on the day of his homecoming, Reece discovers that this was not an act of war by a foreign enemy but a conspiracy that runs to the highest levels of government. Now, with no family and free from the military's command structure, Reece applies the lessons that he's learned in over a decade of constant warfare toward revenge.

Rambo meets Alex Jones in a QAnon fanfic.
Revisado: 01-15-24
As others have noted, this book is heavy-handed with the political mudslinging.
The bad guys are all liberal, sociopathic, and unrepentant narcissists, and the author doesn’t try to give them any more depth than that.
The story is one you’ve heard a million times before. But if you like that kind of thing, then you will like this book.
The narrator is excellent.

It’s a good story and it’s well told. Nothing ground-breaking, but if you like haunted house stories you’ll probably enjoy this book.

Historia
The Scarlet Gospels takes listeners back many years to the early days of two of Barker's most iconic characters in a battle of good and evil as old as time: The long-beleaguered detective Harry D'Amour, investigator of all supernatural, magical, and malevolent crimes, faces off against his formidable and intensely evil rival, Pinhead, the priest of hell. Barker devotees have been waiting for The Scarlet Gospels with baited breath for years, and it's everything they've begged for and more.

Good story with terrible narration.
Revisado: 03-24-23
A couple of the (main) characters sounded like the 87 year old love-child of Bernie Sanders and Jerry Stiller. It was absurd. The story is interesting, but this bizarre vocal choice completely took me out of the story. I actually laughed about it a couple of times. This needs to be re-recorded.

Four chiller novellas set to keep listeners awake long after bedtime. One Past Midnight: "The Langoliers" takes a red-eye flight from LA to Boston into a most unfriendly sky. Only 11 passengers survive, but landing in an eerily empty world makes them wish they hadn't. Something's waiting for them, you see.

Not King’s best
Revisado: 06-15-22
Definitely not king at his best. The first story was good, as was the narration.
The 2nd story was not good, and it was paired with terrible narration. James Woods, who seems like a fine actor, did this story no favors. I literally couldn’t finish it, and that never happens with King. Even his bad stuff is good…except this one.

Historia
Since his wife died, Ralph Roberts has been having trouble sleeping. Each night he wakes up a bit earlier until he's barely sleeping at all. During his late-night walks, he observes some strange things going on in Derry, Maine. He sees colored ribbons streaming from people's heads, two strange little men wandering around town after dark, and more. He begins to suspect that these visions are something more than hallucinations brought on by lack of sleep.

The story and performance were excellent. The music/sounds between chapters frequently ruined a scene…and occasionally drown out the narrator.

Historia
Where is the real Leeds? How does one get there? Is it floating on the air—words and music you can almost reach out and grab like wriggling worms of sound and ether? Is it in the carnival that seethes under the corrupted church, drawing the lost along shadowy corridors and through the strangely angled funhouse doors to the place where the city fathers perform secret rites with the goat-headed masters of the dark?

Reader ruins book for me
Revisado: 10-12-21
After reading “Gateways to Abomination” (twice) , I could not wait to devour this book. The author seems to deliver again, but the reader just ruins the book for me.
This is subversive, visceral writing, but it’s read in the manner of an Econ lecture.
