Awful, unsympathetic characters
Revisado: 04-02-25
I couldn’t get past chapter 5. I didn’t like the story or the characters. It’s strange, because I usually like Philippa Gregory’s work.

Such a cliche
Revisado: 10-04-24
I couldn’t continue with this book. I did not finish it. Everything about it was a cliché about the overworked cop who ends up losing their marriage and messing up their relationship with their kids while they pursue a killer with complete obsession. I just couldn’t bring myself to care about the characters or the story.

Don’t listen to this unless you are on antidepressants
Revisado: 09-29-24
I have lost multiple, close family members, including a sibling and a child, which is probably why the synopsis of the story appealed to me. Listening to it was so depressing! I identified with all of the things she said about grief, but who wants to experience each and every one of them 60 seconds at a time?
I am so glad it is done! Nothing happened. If a story could be described in words, this one was an adjective. There were no verbs at all.

I am so glad that’s over
Revisado: 04-01-24
What a load of rubbish. I love a good thriller, and passionate characters are fun too, but this was so disappointing. It is clear the author has no idea how to write female characters, nor does he understand grief and loss. I say this as a person who has experienced loss due to both murder and suicide. I could not identify with any of the characters. The protagonist is a shallow, reactive, selfish, live wire, ready to destroy anyone in her path to get revenge. And she is so stupid at every step of the way, doing exactly what will make everything worse - for everyone. Her mother is a cartoon of a woman, with no basis in reality. Her reactions to the death of one daughter, and the struggles of another are completely unbelievable. The police, villains, and supporting characters are predictable and made up of total cliches, right down to the sweet old lady saying “fiddlesticks”, and the bad guys gleefully outlining their evil plot to take down the protagonist and get away with it. I was expecting someone to say, “We would have gotten away with it if not for that meddling kid!”
I won’t ruin the story for people who are willing to give this a try, but I will tell you to not expect much.

Very grim view of women
Revisado: 08-19-23
This book kept me reading, but I was frustrated by the amount of misogyny that it used to tell the story. All the women are essentially victims, and almost all the men are villains. Also, the depiction of how people reacted to teenage pregnancy in the 80s was over the top. I grew up in the 80s, and I know some women who had children when they were teenagers. They were not abused like this story would make you believe.

I expected this to be better.
Revisado: 08-30-22
The grammar was good, but the story was silly, unbelievable, and the main character was exceedingly arrogant. She acted like she was the expert in every scene, regardless of subject matter. She also was needlessly b!*chy to just about everyone but her family, best friend and her team. I couldn’t find a motivation for her cynical, rude, and entitled behavior. I could not wait for it to end.
I recommend a pass on this one.

Historia
The Unbreakable Child, a story about forgiving the unforgivable, is a riveting journey inside the secretive underbelly of the St. Thomas / St. Vincent Orphan Asylum in rural Kentucky. It is the first book in the United States to confront the institutionalized physical and emotional abuse suffered by countless orphans at the hands of Catholic clergy over these last decades.

Catholic Church should admit that they are cons
Revisado: 05-27-22
These victims are doubly harmed; first by the people who physically, sexually, and emotionally abused them, and secondly by the Catholic Church’s successful cover of the abusive priests and nuns. I understand that this was a story about the truth of one victim, and I don’t challenge her experience. I am just so angry that organized religion gets away with the destruction of individuals, civil rights, cultures, governments, and basically anything they touch. Religion is one of the roots of all evils.

I hoped for better
Revisado: 04-07-22
I think the writing style and the readers’ performances for this book were both good. The problem I had with it was the story. The crisis’ that the characters faced were very minimal compared to the drama and consequences that resulted from them. For example, a soldier going AWOL, defying orders and getting kicked out of service happens frequently, and sometimes others die because of it. In all my life, I have never seen media coverage of any military person who committed such offenses. However in this story, the author would have you believe that because a soldier was separated and court martialed for these offenses, the media parked outside the entire family’s home for months, and followed all of them like they were Kardashians. The imbalance of choices and consequences simply don’t make sense, especially in light of the never-ending global issues of today’s world. I found the plot of ‘Ask Him Why’ to be just silly.

Revisado: 10-31-17
I should have read more reviews. I stopped listening in chapter 2 because I just can’t buy into the god stuff. I’m happy for those who find it inspirational or whatever, but to me, it just sounds ridiculous.
Performance was fine. Story was boring and self righteous.
