Himalayan Heist, a YA book by Jane Wilson-Howarth, is about three teenagers stranded in the Himalayas after a small plane crash. They make their way over treacherous mountain passes, through dense forests, and over rickety bridges and icy, glacial rivers. They struggle with finding their way and enough food to eat, while facing off with smugglers, bandits, and wild animals. The story moves quickly from adventure to adventure and the kids, though prone to squabbling and errors in judgement, are able to eventually work together to find their way to safety and foil the plans of some very shady smugglers. The book was read by the author who has a lovely British accent.

I totally appreciate silly, satirical prose. I love sci-fi and fantasy. This story makes plenty of references to cultural references that I’ve grown up loving... but I couldn’t get past the authors seeming love for his own political views woven into the narrative. Based on his portrayal of characters I’d guess he loves libertarianism, paints progressives as lazy, drunk, commie idiots, and thinks millennials are worthless unless they behave/think more like baby boomers. Do I know for sure this is the character of the entire set of stories? Nope. As the title suggests I got a few hours in and couldn’t finish. I tried. I really did.

While I’ve never done this before I’m tempted to ask audible for my $ back... not because I think the book is terrible, but I’m legit worried it will wind up as a campaign donation to a Russian Military Intelligence backed election-meddling campaign.

Again, I could be wrong. I couldn’t get through it. I really wanted to enjoy it. I. Just. Couldn’t.

Sadly, this story seemed all too real about the hard work and brutal human nature of survival after the collapse of human civilization. That sad, it was riveting. I was relieved every time I stopped reading and assured myself that I could turn on the lights, make a cup of tea, relax in the safety of my own home. This book should put all survivalists off the hope of the end of the world so they can test their skills. It would not be fun. But this book was- if you like this kind of story. I do strangely. Read it.

What did you love best about A Promise of Fire?

I liked the mix of Greek Mythology, Magic and a bit of not too obnoxious Romance Novel.

What did you like best about this story?

It was funny and didn't take itself too seriously.

What three words best describe Mia Barron’s voice?

Her voice was good for the women characters, but could be better for men.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Battles, Sex and Mythical Creatures - what's not to like?

Any additional comments?

Try to just have fun with it.
