Historia
One winter morning, Kyungha receives an urgent message from her friend Inseon to visit her at a hospital in Seoul. Inseon has injured herself in an accident, and she begs Kyungha to return to Jeju Island, where she lives, to save her beloved pet—a white bird called Ama. A snowstorm hits the island when Kyungha arrives. She must reach Inseon’s house at all costs, but the icy wind and squalls slow her down as night begins to fall. She wonders if she will arrive in time to save the animal—or even survive the terrible cold that envelops her with every step.

relentlessly dark
Revisado: 04-27-25
This is a relentlessly dark novel. If you think you would enjoy reading an entire chapter about a woman who needs to have her fingers stabbed with needles every 3 minutes in order to heal from her injury, this is the right book for you.

Historia
In The Marquise, Sand displays her instinctive feeling for the true sense of the "conte" or short story. She neither analyses nor explains the character of the old noblewoman who fell in love with an actor, she merely suggests the strength of passion in the cold, cynical, aged beauty. She leaves the listener's imagination vibrating with its own images thrown up by the hints she gives. A truly exceptional short story.

Historia
Jean-Benoît Nadeau and Julie Barlow spent a decade traveling back and forth to Paris as well as living there. Yet one important lesson never seemed to sink in: how to communicate comfortably with the French, even when you speak their language. In The Bonjour Effect, Jean-Benoît and Julie chronicle the lessons they learned after they returned to France to live, for a year, with their twin daughters. They offer up all the lessons they learned and explain the most important aspect of all: the French don't communicate, they converse.

First half good, second half sophomoric
Revisado: 05-19-24
I'm an American who lives in France and speaks French. Even though I've been here a while I found some interesting tips and insights in the first half of the book. I can't understand why they selected a narrator who doesn't speak French very well. Ironic!
The second half of the book is filled with sophomoric insights into French culture that are biased and ill-informed.

Great story and acting
Revisado: 01-23-24
I can't understand the negative reviews. This is brilliant but very demanding. If you have trouble following complex plot twists, this may be a challenge for you. But if you enjoy intelligent, disorienting drama, you'll appreciate this outstanding production.

In An Immense World, Ed Yong coaxes us beyond the confines of our own senses, allowing us to perceive the skeins of scent, waves of electromagnetism, and pulses of pressure that surround us.

Pulitzer Prize went to his head
Revisado: 03-13-23
His editor's need to rein him in but there's no controlling him since he got the Pulitzer,
He seems to feel that the artistry of his words and performance are now worthy of a Nobel and a Grammy. Not! This book is super tedious. In short, he takes 100 words to say what a normal person can say in 10 words. The he tries to inspire nonstop wonder with his over-the-top enthusiasm and enunciation

Unbearably terrible
Revisado: 03-08-23
One part romance novel, three parts B- term paper. This pretentious mess wishes it was great historical litt. Not! After dutifully trudging along for two excruciating hours, I found I was able to follow the remainder of the story by listening to the first five minutes of each of the remaining chapters. The underlying true story is fascinating. I guess that's what kept me going. But I should have returned the book and read about The personal librarian on Wikipedia.

Historia
Narrator Dan Stevens ( Downton Abbey) presents an uncanny performance of Mary Shelley's timeless gothic novel, an epic battle between man and monster at its greatest literary pitch. In trying to create life, the young student Victor Frankenstein unleashes forces beyond his control, setting into motion a long and tragic chain of events that brings Victor to the very brink of madness. How he tries to destroy his creation, as it destroys everything Victor loves, is a powerful story of love, friendship, scientific hubris, and horror.
