Important book on the science of climate change
Revisado: 01-27-20
The most alarming thing about this book is that it was written 16 years ago. We have so much knowledge and technological capability and have done so little about climate change. NOTE: I was disappointed to find that Audible has not updated the book to include the chapters that were added in 2015.

Historia
This true modern masterpiece is built around the two fateful words that make up the title and herald the end - “Alas, Babylon.” When a nuclear holocaust ravages the United States, a thousand years of civilization are stripped away overnight, and tens of millions of people are killed instantly. But for one small town in Florida, miraculously spared, the struggle is just beginning, as men and women of all backgrounds join together to confront the darkness....

i really liked the documentary about zip code 12345.

Historia
Jazz Bashara is a criminal. Well, sort of. Life on Artemis, the first and only city on the moon, is tough if you're not a rich tourist or an eccentric billionaire. So smuggling in the occasional harmless bit of contraband barely counts, right? Not when you've got debts to pay and your job as a porter barely covers the rent. Everything changes when Jazz sees the chance to commit the perfect crime, with a reward too lucrative to turn down.

Wait for the Movie Instead
Revisado: 12-03-17
Meh. Sophomore slump. Interesting world building, but most of the characters were pretty stereotypical. I felt like I was reading the script for a blockbuster action film. I hope in his next book Weir goes back to his creativity and genius the inspired The Martian.

Historia
What are Upstanders? Let's start with this: They are the opposite of bystanders. They are problem solvers and protestors, students and parents, professionals and civic leaders. Some fight injustice; others fearlessly challenge the status quo. They are ordinary people who are making extraordinary differences in their communities and beyond. From Salt Lake City to Memphis to Baltimore, Upstanders remind us that participation in civic life has no bounds - and that we can all be the change we wish to see in the world.

Historia
Born to a prominent Chicago judge and his stifled socialite wife, Mia Dennett moves against the grain as a young inner-city art teacher. One night, Mia enters a bar to meet her on-again, off-again boyfriend. But when he doesn't show, she unwisely leaves with an enigmatic stranger. With his smooth moves and modest wit, Colin Thatcher seems at first like a safe one-night stand. But following Colin home will turn out to be the worst mistake of Mia's life.

Historia
Sixteen-year-old Starr Carter moves between two worlds: the poor neighborhood where she lives and the fancy suburban prep school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Khalil was unarmed. Soon afterward, his death is a national headline. Some are calling him a thug, maybe even a drug dealer and a gangbanger. Protesters are taking to the streets in Khalil’s name.

Historia
When his mother passed away at the age of 78, Sherman Alexie responded the only way he knew how: He wrote. The result is this stunning memoir. Featuring 78 poems and 78 essays, Alexie shares raw, angry, funny, profane, tender memories of a childhood few can imagine - growing up dirt poor on an Indian reservation, one of four children raised by alcoholic parents. Throughout, a portrait emerges of his mother as a beautiful, mercurial, abusive, intelligent, complicated woman.

A True Storyteller, Please Listen in Audio!
Revisado: 07-09-17
Sometimes I hesitate about a book when the author narrates it. Not so here! Sherman Alexie's storytelling absolutely made this book. You Don't Have to Say You Love Me (named for the Patsy Cline song) is one of my top reads - and listens - of the year. Please, please, please read the audio version of this book! It was meant to be heard aloud. If you're familiar with Alexie's writing, this book is not like his other ones. It's not a humorous book; in fact, it's painfully intimate. It's his memoir of growing up in poverty on the Spokane Indian Reservation, with alcoholic parents He wrote book after his mother died as both a tribute to her and as a way to come to terms with their complicated relationship. You Don't Have to Say You Love Me was painful to listen to, and I didn't want it to end.
