Preachy and Outdated: A Disappointing Book
Revisado: 02-05-25
Review for "As a Man Thinketh" by Denis Waitley - ⭐⭐⭐
I had high hopes for this book, especially considering its reputation, but I was left feeling disappointed. I was expecting an updated perspective, but it seemed stuck in outdated ideas that didn't resonate with me. As a Black woman well aware of my history, the preachiness of the content felt overwhelming and reminiscent of a "slave Bible" mentality.
The overarching message of being a good person, regardless of how one is treated, and the notion that individuals in jail deserve their fate because they "called it on themselves," felt too simplistic and harsh. While I understand the intention behind these messages, they just didn't sit well with me.
I appreciate authors like Earl Nightingale and many others who offer more nuanced insights. If you're a Christian, you might find value here, but for someone who questions and seeks deeper understanding, I found a few contradictions that left me frustrated. Overall, it just wasn’t the right fit for me.

Love his clear voice that just makes you relax. He truly does bring the story to life. I even listen to him telling the baseball story. Something I have done in real life and would have preferred to watch paint dry. lol

Ok (trigger warnings needed)
Revisado: 10-07-24
The book serves as a profound source of inspiration, but it also contains sensitive topics that warrant a trigger warning, particularly regarding child sexual abuse and assault. These themes can overshadow the positive messages presented throughout the narrative.
It would have been beneficial to learn about the author's personal journey from the beginning, providing a clearer context for her experiences. Sharing her testimony at the end, detailing how she overcame cancer through her own efforts, would have added depth to the story. Additionally, it would be valuable to highlight her use of natural medicine, which played a crucial role in her healing process.
It's important to acknowledge that her background as a successful model likely afforded her the resources and time to pursue alternative treatments, including regular colonics—two to three times a week—and a strict diet consisting solely of fresh vegetables. These lifestyle choices contributed significantly to her recovery.
Overall, the book conveys a powerful message about the connection between trauma and the mind-body relationship. It emphasizes that the mental and emotional struggles we face can manifest physically, largely influenced by our thoughts and beliefs. By addressing these elements more thoroughly, the narrative could resonate even more deeply with readers, offering both inspiration and insight into the complexities of healing.
