The sensitivity towards the victims or survivors of the trafficking. The fact that while it was referenced, Eve’s past wasn’t the focal point. Instead she used her background as incentive and as a way to sympathize with Dorian.

This one kept me guessing and I love that. It's been a long time since I've felt that way about this series. Susan Ericksen brings Eve Dallas to life in my opinion. Stellar performance!

Anita Blake, the Preternatural Being Humper

First, let me say that I stopped reading this series after The Harlequin (released in 2007) and to be honest? I wished I had stopped after Danse Macabre. I'd taken a long break from this series and now, with some emotional distance? I'm able to re-visit the earlier books (Guilty Pleasures through Obsidian Butterfly).

When this series first came out, I thought it was ground-breaking. I found the character of Anita to be fascinating--a necromancer who raises the dead for a living? That's never been done before (well, not to my knowledge.)

I really loved LKH's take on vampires (compared to Anne Rice's emo, philosophical, celibate vampires).
Then, in book 3, we start to see Anita starts to be the exception to various supernatural "rules".
There's a domino effect to her abilities from there and in this book (insert eye roll here) she's able to "call" the munin--the spirit of the late sadistic Lupa, Raina. Sure, some adamant Anita fans might chalk the ability up to Anita having an affinity with the dead or because of the Triumvirate. I call it "convenient".

On the upside? I liked seeing more of Jason's personality in this book. Particularly after the kitchen scene in the "third act" of this book. Anita needs more people like him around her and less syncophants.

My biggest issue with Anita is her stubborn personality, particularly in the scene with Marianne, the vargamor, who is trying to help Anita get over her prudishness with nudity and/or sex. While I understand Anita's POV regarding Nathaniel (i.e. he's so young but the abuse he'd suffered at Raina and Gabriel's hands makes him less than innocent), she needs to treat him as more like a little brother than a victim. Maybe take him under her wing and show him to not be someone's pet and instead, be more independent.

Granted, by the end of the book she admits that she needs help understanding the munin and how to use it as a tool. My biggest complaint is how much and how quickly Anita is God-Moding.

While I'm a Richard fan? I also acknowledge how badly he screwed up his chances with Anita by not shifting BEFORE the events in TKD. He basically shoved her into JC's arms with those actions, but he DOES apologize for it.

I've seen people complain about the sound effects and the music, but they don't bother me. I really like hearing the gunfire and the music because I think it adds ambience.

I dropped this series after reading The Harlequin. I couldn’t stand Anita and her harem of emasculated men. Admittedly, I should’ve dropped the series after Danse Macabre.
Every once in awhile I will re-visit the earlier books in the series (books 1-9). Guilty Pleasures,
Laughing Corpse, Circus of the Damned, The Lunatic Cafe, Bloody Bones, The Killing Dance, (skip Burnt Offerings because I can’t stand the sadistic Vampire Council). Blue Moon and Obsidian Butterfly. That’s it. That’s the furthest I will go.

I just finished listening to Bloody Bones and I cannot believe that Anita continues to tolerate Bert as a boss. He is so greedy that He turns a blind eye to potentially dangerous clients!

The plot in this book is really tight, This book marks the second appearance of the territorial cop who doesn’t think much of Anita and basically there’s a pissing contest. In Lunatic Cafe it was Deputy Atkinson. Now we have Sgt. Freemont. Ugh!

Slow to Start, but Enjoyable

The summary of this book intrigued me. I also enjoyed January LaVoy’s narration in Roberts’, The Liar. This starts off a bit slow, but be patient. It does pick up.

I’m a fan of the In Death series that Roberts writes under the pseudonym, J.D. Robb. So she’s skilled in writing a mystery. I enjoyed most of this book, but what disgusted me (as well they should!) was the arrogant, sociopathic killer.

Yes, some of the plot is predictable—especially if you’ve read some of Roberts’ romance titles. I will forewarn readers who are sensitive to violence and/or triggered by news of mass shootings. This book will not be for you.

First In Death Installment I ever returned

I hate to do this, but I’m going to drop this series as I’ve grown tired of the similar or parallel plots to previous installments. In addition, the frequency of victimized women and/or their circumstances similar to Eve’s past has become tedious. Don’t get me wrong, I applaud Eve’s resolute determination to make something of herself despite her tragic beginnings. However, I'm tired of almost every victim reminding Eve of herself and that room in Dallas, TX.

I've stuck with this series for this long because I love how the supporting cast is well fleshed out. Unfortunately, the increasing transparency of social commentary cancels out any "escapism" in fiction. For the first time, I ended up returning this title and exchanging it for something else.

Let me start this by saying I didn’t realize that this was the extended edition. Being that I’ve been told The Stand was King’s longest novel; I hadn’t realized there was an extended edition. I tried to hang in there because this is one of King’s more celebrated titles. While I understand that King was building his characters with Larry, Franny, Nick et al, i just couldn’t bring myself to care. Don’t let me dissuade you. If you’re like me and want pied to know what The Stand is about, give this a shot. Grover Gardner is a gifted narrator. If it’s not for you, you can exchange it for something else. It was just too long winded for me.

One of the few best sequels I've read

Just finished this and I have to say, it's very rare for a "sequel" book to be as good as the first book. I was really surprised. Like many, I've always wondered what happened to young Dan Torrance after he grew up and boy, this paints a very realistic picture.

I'm excited to see that Ewan MacGregor was cast as adult Dan Torrance and while I know the movie will most likely live up to the book; I'll still enjoy it.

Give this one a shot.

Getting tired of the sex-based crimes and repeats

Let me start by saying that this series has been going strong since 1995 and there are close to (if not already) 50 installments in the series, so there are bound to be similarities or parallels, between cases.

That being said, the frequency of sexual assault as a plot device or crime in this series is getting tiresome. In addition, the women support group facet was lifted right out of Brotherhood. Granted, it was one person this time around instead of three, but still.

Calculated and Born were similar in that you had conspiracies in accounting firms in both.

I'm going to start borrowing the audiobooks from my public library instead of wasting a credit.

On a positive note, Susan Ericksen delivers a wonderful performance as always!

Losing Interest in writing this series?

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

This is the first time I felt disappointment by a book in this series. While the copycat plot was an interesting MO; this felt like lazy writing to me. This book felt predictable and watered down. There was no character progress and the characters felt blah--as though Roberts' heart wasn't in it. It felt like she was just going through the motions.

Has Dark in Death turned you off from other books in this genre?

It also felt like Roberts was using the author (I forget her name) as a mouthpiece to break the fourth wall and address more rabid fans of her books who take her work far too much to heart.

What about Susan Ericksen’s performance did you like?

Her performance was stellar as always.

Could you see Dark in Death being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

No.

Any additional comments?

I think, in future, I will borrow future installments of this series from my local library before I use up a credit.
