Historia
Meredith and Nina Whitson are as different as sisters can be. One stayed at home to raise her children and manage the family apple orchard; the other followed a dream and traveled the world to become a famous photojournalist. But when their beloved father falls ill, Meredith and Nina find themselves together again, standing alongside their cold, disapproving mother, Anya, who even now, offers no comfort to her daughters.

I teared up at the ending. The author has evocative story telling skills that kept me listening for hours at a time.

Historia
Hamburg, 1942. Seventeen-year-old Anna knows she can never tell her proud parents the truth about where she is going. She must hide the fact that she is pregnant, that the father of her unborn child is dead, and that she is on her way to a special maternity home, where her baby will be given to a perfect family. She tells herself that this is the best solution. She doesn’t expect to feel the rush of love for her beautiful baby boy in the white blanket or the devastation when he is snatched from her, never to be seen again.

Got better toward the end
Revisado: 09-03-23
So many secrets held by Anna/Etta/Margie, it was hard to follow at the beginning. I think I would have enjoyed it more in book form. The narrator’s voice changed for the various characters, but was a bit too “girlish” for my liking. Still, the theme is strong and thought provoking regarding how we treat others and our first impressions of our acquaintances and friends. The book was written to remind us to learn from past mistakes and take personal responsibility for the things we can control.

Historia
“They’re going to kill me soon,” begins the note Amelia discovers in an antique hurdy-gurdy. From that moment on, the shy young woman finds herself doing all kinds of things she never thought possible. Between newfound intimacies and a risky journey into the past, Amelia comes to see herself in a whole new light. The scrawled note drives Amelia to find out what happened to the person who wrote it, identified only as “Hannah.” Who was Hannah? Was she really murdered? Amelia’s investigation leads her to dizzying new heights of romance and danger. Like a tightrope walker, she must not look down—especially when she finds herself in situations uncannily similar to those Hannah faced just before her murder. Like the Mrs. Pollifax mysteries for which Dorothy Gilman is famous, The Tightrope Walker features a spirited and unpretentious heroine and an intriguing mystery, enhanced by colorful settings and characters. Ruth Ann Phimister’s skillful narration adds a personal dimension, making you care about Amelia and the fascinating and dangerous people she meets.

So fun to listen to
Revisado: 08-12-23
I read Tightrope Walker many years ago and don’t remember liking it much. There is a touch of “seeing” and “hearing” things that aren’t there, and maybe that’s why. I was never much for clairvoyance or paranormal. However, listening to it read by this fine narrator minimized the memory I had of it. I connected with Amelia Jones and love how she became a strong woman through the things she endured. It is an exciting murder mystery, and every time I thought we were at the climax, there was another plot shift. Dorothy Gillman tidies up everything at the end, which I appreciated. So often mystery writers seem to rush to the end as if to say, “Ok, all done!” This time around, I wholeheartedly recommend Tightrope Walker to mystery lovers.

I have read this masterpiece 3-4 times, seen the film, but this is the first time to listen. The narrator does a fantastic job, and this is Richard Adams’s finest work.

Historia
Roshar is a world of stone and storms. Uncanny tempests of incredible power sweep across the rocky terrain so frequently that they have shaped ecology and civilization alike. Animals hide in shells, trees pull in branches, and grass retracts into the soilless ground. Cities are built only where the topography offers shelter. It has been centuries since the fall of the 10 consecrated orders known as the Knights Radiant, but their Shardblades and Shardplate remain: mystical swords and suits of armor.

I get a medal for finishing!
Revisado: 03-13-23
Brandon Sanderson created an amazing fantasy world. I can’t fathom how his brain and imagination worked in tandem to produce such descriptive scenery and characters. I admit, I had a difficult time following the various story lines, which jumped around between characters and time periods. I would begin to get into one scene when the section would end, the narrator changed and we were off on another adventure with a different character and story line. Fantasy is not my favorite genre, and so my achievement is in persevering through the 40 hours of listening. So, can I say I enjoyed the moment as I experienced it, but am not inclined to read the next books in the series?

Jinger, along with three of her sisters, wrote a New York Times bestseller about their religious convictions. She believed this level of commitment would guarantee God's blessing, even though in private she felt constant fear that she wasn't measuring up to the high standards demanded of her.

Could have been more personal
Revisado: 02-21-23
Jinger reads her story as herself. For a memoir, it adds to the listening experience. She’s not a professional narrator, but listening to her tell her own story, she makes it like sitting down together. It took courage for her to go public with this book, and I knew it wasn’t a tell-all narrative, however, it didn’t make a clear enough distinction between the legalism of Bill Gothard, and salvation through faith. At times I thought she was engaged in theological hair splitting. She came close, but never outright called Bill Gothard a cult leader. And, it took a long time before she even mentioned Gothard never married, yet taught family, marriage, and parenting rules for success.
It’s difficult to rate a book such as this. It’s her story and she can tell what she wants about her own life. But it wasn’t deep and didn’t pull back her mask very far to see the real Jinger.

Not what I expected
Revisado: 07-03-22
Unless I followed along with the print copy, I don’t know if this is an abridged adaptation or not. It seemed short, and was divided into parts rather than chapters. The parts were radio dramatizations and when each finished, the announcer said what we were listening to. I found that annoying and disrupting to the story.
A dramatization is superior to a narration since it includes sound effects of the battle scenes. I have watched several movie versions as well, but this one seemed overly dramatized to the point of not being able to understand the words. Without the visual special effects to enhance the groanings, gruntings and hissings of the antagonist creatures, I found myself longing for a straightforward audio book with a good narrator.
With all the criticism, let me add that any presentation of The Hobbit is an experience in nostalgia. I recall reading it myself for the first time in college. (My roommate was shocked that I hadn’t read JRR Tolkien and gave me a gift set for Christmas.) And I recall reading it aloud to my own children. The Hobbit is a literary masterpiece in every sense of the word.
