a bit boring
Revisado: 10-14-24
I was really looking forward to this installment but I found it hard to follow. Prof Nash hardly appeared and I want to know more about his back story. too many characters were introduced and I couldn't keep the straight so I kind of let my mind wander. I stuck with it out of loyalty to the series but it was boring.

Historia
One blustery night in 1928, a whale washes up on the shores of the English Channel. By law, it belongs to the King, but twelve-year-old orphan Cristabel Seagrave has other plans. She and the rest of the household—her sister, Flossie; her brother, Digby, long-awaited heir to Chilcombe manor; Maudie Kitcat, kitchen maid; Taras, visiting artist—build a theatre from the beast’s skeletal rib cage. Within the Whalebone Theatre, Cristabel can escape her feckless stepparents and brisk governesses, and her imagination comes to life.

I enjoyed it but
Revisado: 04-23-24
the author is not a storyteller just verbose. my mind drifted during the first part of the book so much that i put it away to listen to something else. It should have been about 3 hours shorter, should have started just before the war. everything before that was the authors arrogance. nearly all of the adults in the story were pretty terrible people which is at the same time a stereotype for thay class and time and a little unbelievable. that said the kids could have easily been portrayed as victims (which would have made this book unreadable) but rather they became the heros of their stories. so no I didn't love it but it could have easily been a dud.

In this award-winning Audible Studios production, Trevor Noah tells his wild coming-of-age tale during the twilight of apartheid in South Africa. It’s a story that begins with his mother throwing him from a moving van to save him from a potentially fatal dispute with gangsters, then follows the budding comedian’s path to self-discovery through episodes both poignant and comical.

I see a lot of people don't like the repetition...
Revisado: 11-04-19
And I agree, it was at times repetitive. I didn't listen straight through as my mind started to wander in parts. So I broke it up with listening to a different book when I was about halfway through. But I'm glad I came back to finish it because I realized by the end that the repetition was either (1) for effect, or (2) to emphasize the miracle that would come at the end. This was not my favorite book of all time by any stretch, but it did shed light on a culture that we Americans don't know much about. And in reading some of the reviews on this book about the repetition, sadly it seems we don't care either, which given our own indifference to injustice in this country is not at all a surprise. This book was insightful, entertaining and I can't wait for the movie.

Historia
Anna is distraught when her beloved mother, Ines, passes away. She inherits a box of papers, handwritten in Italian and yellowed with age, and a tantalizing promise that the truth about what happened during the war lies within. The diaries lead Anna to the small village of Rofelle, where she slowly starts to heal as she explores sun-kissed olive groves, and pieces together her mother’s past: happy days spent herding sheep across Tuscan meadows cruelly interrupted when World War Two erupted and the Nazis arrived....

Frustratingly naive main character (spoilers)
Revisado: 11-04-19
How could Inez, a member of the Italian resistance during WWII, be so obtuse. She, a girl from rural Italy, should at least be knowledgable about the birds and the bees from the farm animals if nothing else. But to expect her life to become a fairytale after experiencing first hand the horrors of the war is a down right silly premise for a novel. The narrator really played up young Inez's naivete too with her childish voice. I felt no connection with any of the characters because there wasn't sufficient insight into their history to sympathize with them. I only get the briefest of glimpses into the previous lives of all the other characters except Inez and still her story wasn't well developed. And how could her husband suddenly become the villain when he returns to England? He was a POW before meeting Inez so don't try and tell me the last few months of the war while the 2 were apart were enough to change him into a different person. If this were the 1st WWII era novel I'd ever read I might have given the story 3 stars for lack knowing better, but this I can't finish. I hate wasting my time listening to bad stories.
