Trust the Author
Revisado: 10-12-19
This is a tough one. But this author has earned my trust. The Highway is an intertwining, emotional and disturbing story. I was captivated by the writing (and the narration). And it left me longing. So hang on if you have the stomach for it.

Six months ago, Lucas Davenport tackled his first case as a statewide troubleshooter, and he thought that one was plenty strange enough. But that was before the Russian got killed. On the shore of Lake Superior, a man named Vladimir Oleshev is found shot dead, three holes in his head and heart, and though nobody knows why he was killed, everybody - the local cops, the FBI, and the Russians themselves - has a theory. And when it turns out he had very high government connections, that's when it hits the fan.

Good but the background voice is quite annoying
Revisado: 09-15-19
The story and narration are great but the voice in the background throughout most of the recording was annoying and kind of creepy! I kept thinking someone else was talking to me. Distracting.

Historia
Renée Ballard works the night shift in Hollywood, beginning many investigations but finishing none, as each morning she turns her cases over to day shift detectives. A once up-and-coming detective, she's been given this beat as punishment after filing a sexual harassment complaint against a supervisor. But one night she catches two cases she doesn't want to part with: the brutal beating of a prostitute left for dead in a parking lot and the killing of a young woman in a nightclub shooting. Ballard is determined not to give up at dawn.

Great Story Well Told
Revisado: 09-15-17
What did you love best about The Late Show?
Multiple characters with well developed personalities. More than one story line.
What does Katherine Moennig bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
I'm not sure why some other reviewers don't care for Moennig's narration. I thought she perfectly captured the main character ... even and steady...without any "overplaying." And she didn't bring a bunch of "affect" to the male characters. It felt spot-on for this book.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
It felt more real than I expected. I did laugh at points. Very engaging dialogues. Perfect amount of descriptors.
Any additional comments?
Definitely worth a credit. A very engaging listen.

After getting a note demanding his presence, Federal Agent Aaron Falk arrives in his hometown for the first time in decades to attend the funeral of his best friend, Luke. Twenty years ago when Falk was accused of murder, Luke was his alibi. Falk and his father fled under a cloud of suspicion, saved from prosecution only because of Luke’s steadfast claim that the boys had been together at the time of the crime. But now, more than one person knows they didn’t tell the truth back then, and Luke is dead.

It’s 1996, and Reacher is still in the army. In the morning they give him a medal, and in the afternoon they send him back to school. That night he’s off the grid. Out of sight, out of mind. Two other men are in the classroom—an FBI agent and a CIA analyst. Each is a first-rate operator, each is fresh off a big win, and each is wondering what the hell they are doing there. Then they find out: A Jihadist sleeper cell in Hamburg, Germany, has received an unexpected visitor—a Saudi courier, seeking safe haven while waiting to rendezvous with persons unknown.

Revisado: 11-18-16
Rare I don't whistle happily along listening to a Jack Reacher series novel but this one just didn't capture my attention. Narration great as usual. Terrific descriptions of scenes and people. The story line is what dragged it down in my opinion.

This is one of the best of many I've enjoyed listening to. Good story. Interesting characters. Timely. Great narration (challenging given the scope of characters' age and gender). A terrific listen. That is all.

Historia
Heartwood is a kind of tree that grows in layers. And as Billy Bob's grandfather once told him, you do well in life by keeping the roots in a clear stream and not letting anyone taint the water for you. But in Holland's dusty little hometown of Deaf Smith, in the hill country north of Austin, local kingpin Earl Deitrich has made a fortune running roughshod and tainting anyone who stands in his way. Billy Bob has problems with Deitrich and his shamelessly callous demeanor, but can't shake the legacy of his passion for Deitrich's "heartbreak-beautiful" wife, Peggy Jean.

Narration slowed down story
Revisado: 01-17-13
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
I wouldn't rec the audio version because the narration felt a bit sluggish to me. Seemed to bog the storyline down, if that makes sense, but I would rec the book to read! It wasn't Sklar's voice per se--actually his voice is quite lovely--but the pace seemed off. Too slow and flat.Didn't ramp up w/ the story.
What did you like best about this story?
Love the JLB's compositions. He can paint a scene so that you are THERE. One of my faves in this story was a description of Beau running.
