Sabriel is what YA can be! Solid world-building from Garth Nix coupled with an honorable protagonist and a bevy of robust fully-fleshed characters.

Nothing is overwrought or overdone. There's no whining or brooding. No vapid love triangle.

The generosity of detail and skillful reserve with which the author delivers key plot elements contribute to a compelling world overall. There is a mystique about the wall, the old kingdom, Sabriel and her companions that entices the reader's curiosity.

A must-read for lovers of adventure and fantasy!

And a must-listen for lovers of Tim Curry! His performance is stellar!

The narration was elegant and clear. The content was sufficient for a novice and also in depth enough to penetrate a deeper understanding of the religious and cultural practices.

Only critique is a lack of a pdf containing the various charts and tables depicting Orishas, different traditions and their focus, Ifa divination, etc.

Otherwise, exceptional and straightforward.

The title of this book should be Catfish

I heard this guy on NPR and got the book because I thought it would actually dive into the mysterious and differing habits of whales and dolphins... he hardly talks about their communication, family structures, and historical relationship to humans (beyond whaling). This book was more about him and "the science" and beaurocracy of bone hunting. I'm glad he contextualized his passion and the work that goes into it but come on... there was never enough detailed about what whales do, why they behave the way they do, how they interact with us and other animals, and what we can learn from them.

the narration is everything!

The voice acting gave life to the characters and made a good story a great one. The exploration of religion, culture, metaphysics of the universe, and human nature are compelling enough.

you might find yourself wanting a character to like though and they are in short supply. Gurney comes closest (again probably because of the great ensemble).

awesome narration with distinct accents that gut each character! the character relationships were so real and got me so invested in the outcome of the story.

don't pass this one up! as good as or better than the Harry Potter and Eragon franchises

Couldn't stop listening

The narrator put me off at first with the changing volume of characters and the voice he chose for the captain, BUT after awhile it really grew on me. Every character is distinct and he captures the attitudes of the scenes and action very well.

The story takes you to 4 world's and through space. Loved all the different species.

Storytelling was dynamic. My favorite from Octavia thus far. The evolution of Doro and the Sun Woman was so compelling.

A must read, even if the narrator got wonky with the voices and accents sometimes. An additional female narrator would be an improvement.
