In Prevail Until the Bitter End, Alexandra Lohse explores the gossip and innuendo, the dissonant reactions and perceptions of Germans to the violent dissolution of the Third Reich. Mobilized for total war, soldiers and citizens alike experienced an unprecedented convergence of military, economic, social, and political crises.

Christa Lewis narrates all my favorite books it seems. I think we’ve all wondered what the Germans were thinking during all the horror and destruction of the Nazi era. This book answers that.

Historia
From the earliest recorded history of the Russian state, its people have sought to define their place in the world. And while many of us look to make sense of Russia through its political history, in many ways a real grasp of this awe-inspiring country comes from looking closely at its cultural achievements. The 24 lectures of Understanding Russia: A Cultural History survey hundreds of years of Russian culture, from the world of Ivan the Terrible to the dawn of the Soviet Union to the post-war tensions of Putin’s Russia.

She doesn’t hide her politics very well
Revisado: 01-30-24
This became tiresome. The first few chapters were informative, but she spends entirely too much lecture time trashing Socialism, Lenin, Trotsky, and bless her heart, Stalin. When she mentioned Ayn Rand I knew what was coming. All that garbage isn’t what I came to hear.

Historia
Dunbar-Ortiz adroitly challenges the founding myth of the United States and shows how policy against the Indigenous peoples was colonialist and designed to seize the territories of the original inhabitants, displacing or eliminating them. And as Dunbar-Ortiz reveals, this policy was praised in popular culture, through writers like James Fenimore Cooper and Walt Whitman, and in the highest offices of government and the military.

Tiresome
Revisado: 01-25-24
I’m well onboard with the knowledge of the atrocities done to the indigenous and African people, and well aware that American forefathers were mostly scoundrels, but this author goes a little over the top in several ways. She never distinguishes between the perpetrators of atrocities and the regular white people. She calls them all white supremacists, and even indicates, no, she actually says that the descendants of the Scottish settlers still feel that way. She talks about the Mayans like they were so peaceful and intellectually advanced, conveniently omitting the public human sacrifices done before those ball games on that fancy court at Chichen Itza, and of course all the indigenous North Americans were perfect people according to her. She rips off Holocaust terms like “Final Solution”, talks crap about the Jewish religion, and all Christian religions, and every US president. It’s fine to harbor resentment, but tell the history, and leave out the snarky crap.

Historia
Cindy Murphy is the early 2000s poster girl for having it all. A top job in finance in Manhattan, two delightful daughters and a house in the suburbs. But Cindy’s life is built on a lie. She’s really a Russian spy sent to live in deep cover in the US and send intel back to Moscow. Rosamund Pike narrates this true story documentary about an extraordinary woman who deceives her friends, neighbors, boss and even her children.

So, how did she betray the US?
Revisado: 12-25-23
This is a great story. It’s well done on all accounts, and terribly sad. Fact is, the “Murphy’s” never really betrayed anyone. They had ultra low level assignments. The worst villain here is the melodramatic FBI and CIA. How many pedophiles got away while they were playing G-men with the nice suburban Russian spy couple? Lidiya “Cindy” was amazing at her job. She deserves a worldwide standing ovation. And as Sting says, you know the Russians love their children too.

Historia
Robert Sapolsky’s Behave, his now classic account of why humans do good and why they do bad, pointed toward an unsettling conclusion: We may not grasp the precise marriage of nature and nurture that creates the physics and chemistry at the base of human behavior, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. Now, in Determined, Sapolsky takes his argument all the way, mounting a brilliant (and in his inimitable way, delightful) full-frontal assault on the pleasant fantasy that there is some separate self telling our biology what to do.

Relevant and worthwhile
Revisado: 12-12-23
One of my favorite books this year, the author makes and clarifies his point with all the neuroscience in the first half, and all the behavioral knowns, history and philosophy in the second half. The author is distinctly human, deeply compassionate, and downright funny. The narrator is perfect. It’s one of those books you don’t want to end, and feel a little sad when the Audible guy says he hopes you’ve enjoyed it. I went into the book already agreeing with his assertions, but whether you agree or not, I can’t imagine anyone coming away without a greater sense of compassion for others and a bit of humility in ourselves.

Historia
Borderline personality disorder, autism, narcissism, psychosis, Asperger's: All of these syndromes have one thing in common---lack of empathy. In some cases, this absence can be dangerous, but in others it can simply mean a different way of seeing the world. In The Science of Evil, Simon Baron-Cohen, an award-winning British researcher who has investigated psychology and autism for decades, develops a new brain-based theory of human cruelty.

Two major problems with this
Revisado: 12-10-23
Interesting book, yes. But in my view there are two major problems, one with the science, one with an assertion he spent too much time trying to explain. First the science…the irony of literally torturing animals to study empathy is so lost to this man it’s alarming. It made me wonder if it was his own lack of empathy that drove his interest in this topic to begin with. Some of the tests he blandly described were so cruel I had to skip through. Second problem was listening to him make excuses for Adolf Eichman, suggesting he may have had something like Aspergers. And he extended the notion to many of the Nazis, because at trial they said they were “just following orders”, and following orders is a trait of ASD. Never mind that they all said that to divert responsibility for their crimes. He also suggested that an ASD guy was not culpable for assaulting a woman. But what can you expect from Psychologists who say animal torture is a sign of psychopathy, then turn around and contrive horrifically cruel situations to throw an animal into, some of them baby animals, then shock the hell out of the poor thing to see what it will do. I hate that I wasted a few hours of my life listening to this guy. The narrator was excellent though.

Excellent
Revisado: 03-18-23
Another excellent book by Mr Douglas. He covers a broad sampling of popular murder cases here, and while we all have our favorite cases to ponder, we also have our least favorite cases. Don’t judge this book because he happens to delve into one of those for you. The last few paragraphs of this book are quite profound. I think this is one of his best. Mr Hillgartner is perfect, as always.

"Life changes fast....You sit down to dinner and life as you know it ends." These were among the first words Joan Didion wrote in January 2004. Her daughter was lying unconscious in an intensive care unit, a victim of pneumonia and septic shock. Her husband, John Gregory Dunne, was dead. The night before New Year's Eve, while they were sitting down to dinner, he suffered a massive and fatal coronary. The two had lived and worked side by side for nearly 40 years.

Historia
The life of Princess May of Teck is one of the great Cinderella stories in history. From a family of impoverished nobility, she was chosen by Queen Victoria as the bride for her eldest grandson, the scandalous Duke of Clarence, heir to the throne, who died mysteriously before their marriage. Despite this setback, she became queen, mother of two kings, grandmother of the current queen, and a lasting symbol of the majesty of the British throne.

This is so well done, don’t miss this audiobook. The perfect narration of an author that is thorough, siting other histories, articles, and personal journals of royal family members (which gives histories so much more depth). She parallels world, political, and cultural events along with the lives of the family, which makes this book not just a royal bio or list of facts, but an excellent, even a stand alone historical text.

I’ve long considered the Red Army of WWII as one of the greatest armies in history. Unfortunately, ridiculous world politics has kept populations isolated from each other, subjected to propaganda and miss information. As we begin to learn more from individuals like Sgt. Yuliya, we are reminded that the greatest generation was a worldwide phenomenon. This memoir is a unique day to day life account, what home life was like, war time conditions in Russia, school, military training, what they ate, the songs they sang, how they relaxed, and especially the depth of the camaraderie between the soldiers, the intense patriotism they felt, and the willingness to give their lives for both. If that isn’t enough, the marvelous Christa Lewis reads the book for us.
