Great narration of one of my favorite books ever

Total
5 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 07-17-03

I first read the novel many years ago after becoming a big fan of the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical. I am so happy that now I have such an excellent narration of it! I think Henry Butler does a really great job. He has a very good voice for audiobook narration. After listening for a few minutes I got so into the story that I didn't even notice that it was him reading anymore. You just forget that anyone is reading aloud to you and get so engrossed in the story. You even forget that it's just one person reading when there are different characters speaking and he has to alter his voice or tone a bit for each one. He does it so subtly and well that you don't even notice that it's him and you think it's each character that's speaking! I was especially impressed by how he read the "Persian's narrative" chapters with a slight Persian accent. I can't say enough about how much I enjoyed listening to this audiobook!

The only drawback about this audiobook is that when I transferred it onto my Audible Otis player, it didn't allow me to skip a chapter or a few chapters at a time. Thus whenever I accidently left my player on for a long time, I had to hold the rewind botton down to rewind hundreds of minutes of the book. It wasn't the end of the world, but it was a slight inconvenience. Anyhow, I would still heartily recommend this audiobook to fans of the musical, musical lovers, and people who love the city Paris.

I liked the narrator more than I liked the book

Revisado: 05-06-03

I agree with the review that says it's the kind of book you can't put down because you want to know what's coming next. However, I just have to say that this book really surprised me. The only other book I've read by Nicolas Sparks is "A Walk to Remember." I was expecting this book to be as clean and full of Christian themes and references as "A Walk to Remember." But I have to warn you, it's not! The romance isn't as innocent as the one in "A Walk to Remember." The book definitely has more R-rated content than I was expecting. I suppose that the reason is because the author is writing about a romance between two adults, not two teenagers falling in love for the first time. But even then, I don't think it's necessary to put in stuff like the two main charachters having pre-marital sex.

There are also parts of the book that are really long. For instance, the search for Kyle seemed to go on and on. And there are pretty lengthy descriptions of some fire scenes and things like that. But it's not without cause. The long scenes do reveal important tid-bits about the characters and that sort of thing. But they just went on for too long for me. I just wanted to hear more about the relationship between the main characters.

Also, this book didn't make me cry either like "A Walk to Remember."

But something that I liked about the book was that the characters seemed pretty psycologically believable to me. All the characters just made a lot of sense--they didn't seem like fairy tale creatures that you know could never exist in a real world. And I could relate parts of me with parts of certain characters too.

I also want to mention that I think the narrator does a great job. His voice does sound a little too deep for Kyle's voice sometimes but other than that, his voice is very pleasant, suitable for this book, and easy to listen to and enjoy.

Tuck Everlasting Audiolibro Por Natalie Babbitt arte de portada

Extremely thought-provoking book!

Total
5 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 05-04-03

I recently saw the DVD for the movie Tuck Everlasting and I really liked it so I listened to the audiobook as well. For those of you who are reading the book before you see the movie, I think the movie is one of the most true-to-the-book movies I've seen and they did a great job with it (there are a few differences in the movie but I won't give them away because I think they're pretty obvious. But the basic, key things in the book arn't changed).

As for the audiobook, I think it's great! The narrator does a great job. She pronounces things very clearly (almost too precisely, but it's not to the point that it's annoying) and she does a great job with the voices! For example, her voice for the Tuck father and mother sound nothing like her regular narrator voice! It's quite remarakable.

I think that this book is more of a children's book but I'm currently a college student and I still found it extremely thought provoking and I enjoyed it as a novel. It's got strong themes, it presents fascinating (and often timeless and unanswerable) questions, the author gives great descriptions of characters and places, etc. It made me think about things I have literally never thought about in my life. There are a few quotes in the book that I literally copied down because I thought they were so fascinating and true (the parts where the Tuck father is talking to Winnie in the boat). And to be honest, watching the movie and DVD bonus features helped me understand the book better!

Very helpful audiobook

This book was recommended to me by my counselor and fortunately I found it on audible.com! My counselor said that she thought it was very psychologically sound and that kind of thing. As far as I know (I'm no psychologist however), that's right.

The narrator (author) has a slight accent and her voice isn't exactly lively or full of enthusiasm, but it's certainly not boring once you listen to it for a while. I didn't fall asleep or start tuning out the narrator when I was listening.

I found this book really interesting and helpful. It gave me a lot of insight on how to deal with anger and with people that I have conflicts with. It talks about relationships between couples a lot but I'm not married and I still found the advice helpful for dealing with family members, roommates (in college), and other people I know.

For me, it was a book I had to take in small doses. I couldn't listen to it in consecutive days when I went running as I do with other audiobooks (primarily novels) because I needed time to digest things that I heard. Psychology isn't as easy for me to take in large doses as it is for me to take in novels and stories.

Another thing is that I am a really visual learner and for a book like this, I would probably find it more helpful to read it in book form so I could highlight certain parts and go back to it when I need to later on. I don't usually listen to really information packed stuff and remember it all that well. But I'm still glad I bought the audiobook because it was a good way to get through the book quickly even though I can't remember all the advice I got from it. I got to listen to it all and maybe later I'll buy the book and then go back an reread it slowly, underlining stuff and processing it and applying it slowly. But who knows, maybe if I listen to it a couple times I'll be able to get it as ingrained into my system as I would by physically reading it.

A Room With a View Audiolibro Por E. M. Forster arte de portada

Ok, but not my favorite book

Total
3 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 04-15-03

I ordered this audiobook because I am planning to go to Italy this summer for two months to study. I wanted to get a feel for Italy and get myself more pumped to go. I didn't really know much about the book and I think I didn't like it that much because it wasn't exactly what I was expecting. I thought it was going to be a super romantic book. It is somewhat romantic but it talks a whole lot more about convention and that kind of thing than I wanted to hear. I wasn't really looking for a deep novel or anything like that. I just finished listening to "A Walk to Remember" so I guess I was expecting this book to be a lot like it (light and sweet, more focused on the relationship between the guy and girl than about social customs and that kind of thing).

I like the narrator Wanda McCaddon a lot. I really liked how she narrated "A Secret Garden." But for this book I didn't like the voice she used for Lucy Honeychurch that much. It sounded a little too childish and whiny for how I would imagine Lucy Honeychurch's voice to sound. But other than that she did fine for this book.

Not so helpful for a beginner

Revisado: 03-14-03

I am currently a voice major in a university and I bought this in hopes that I could better my German since I have to study songs in other languages. I took 1 year of German in 5th grade (9 years ago so I don't remember a whole lot) and I've sung some German songs. But I don't have a very wide vocabulary in German from that.

Thus, when I listened to this audiobook in the car, I didn't learn much. I am the kind of person who needs to see a word or know how it's spelled (so I can at least picture it in my head) if I'm going to learn it. In this audiobook a man just says a word in English and then a woman says the word in German twice (there's a little bit of time in between so that you can repeat it aloud yourself). However, that's not enough for me. I think it would be more ideal if they would spell the German word out first or something like that for the visual people like me. Also, even if I did just try to repeat after the woman on the audiobook, I wasn't sure if I was saying it right or not. I think that perhaps the best place to learn a language is in a classroom. That way you can see and hear the language, as well as be counseled on your pronunciation.

Perhaps if a person was pretty fluent in German or studied it a while ago and just needs to brush up on it, this audiobook would be helpful. But again, if someone doesn't have a pretty extensive background in German, I don't think this audiobook will be too helpful.

The Man in the Iron Mask Audiolibro Por Alexandre Dumas arte de portada

Not bad, but not my favorite

Total
3 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 03-14-03

To be honest, this was not my favorite audiobook. Although the narrator did a pretty good job with the voices, I didn't think he deserved 5 stars. Sometimes I couldn't tell certain characters apart in the dialogues because the narrator didn't make their voices different enough. Also, I just didn't agree with the way he voiced and read the lines of certain characters. But that was not a huge percentage of the time so I think that someone who really loves the book, author, or genre could still find this audiobook extremely enjoyable. I just happen to be really picky about how the narration is done.

Something else that made this audiobook one of my not-so-favorites is a factor that's not narrator or author's fault at all. I had seen the movie (with Leonardo DiCaprio) so I had a bunch of preconceived notions of what would happen in the book. However, I kept waiting for certain things to happen but they never did. So I just have to warn people who have seen the movie but arn't familiar with the original book, the movie is not very loyal to the book in terms of plot!

The narrator didn't suite me so well

Total
4 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 03-05-03

I really love the book Jane Eyre and I do think that Flo Gibson (the narrator) does a good job with it. She's good at capturing each character, the mood, etc. However, I personally did not enjoy her voice so well. She has a really low, deep voice and she sounds very bitter while reading this book. Perhaps it's because the character Jane in the book is supposed to be a bitter character and she is telling the story in first person. But I still didn't like Flo Gibson's voice. I like listening to pretty, melodic voices. That's just my personal preference. But since, as of now, this is the only unabridged reading of Jane Eyre on audible.com right now, I still highly recommend it. If the narrator's voice doesn't bother you, I think you would give it 5 stars.

The Silmarillion, Volume I Audiolibro Por J. R. R. Tolkien arte de portada

I loved it!

Total
5 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 02-22-03

As he does with "The Hobbit," Martin Shaw does a great job with "The Simarillion" (I am referring to all three volumes). He pronounces all the Middle Earth names well and brings each character to life.

The only thing is that I think the Simarillion is one of those books that is a bit difficult to listen to. It's hard to remember the names or to picture how it's spelled since they are Middle Earth names made up by Tolkien. This is one of those books that are perhaps easier to read because then you can see all the names spelled out so you can remember it better. So I guess a good way to go is to read the book first and then listen to the audiobook.

I really enjoyed this audiobook although it is very short. Tolkien narrates his work so well that I really wish that he had recorded an audiobook of the entire work!
