discombobulated, boring mess with an unlikeable main character.
Revisado: 08-10-24
The description is definitely NOT what is actually in the book. 30 something year old suburban woman with a family is given a random key and vague note. she pursues "clues" in a nonsensical mystery to the detriment of everything in her life getting ruined. and it's really vague if it was worth it. a lot of trauma dumping and dumb, unrelated stuff coming together at the end but not in any satisfying way. Jeff Van Dermeer worst book (that I've read)

Historia
They came after the Diseray. Some were terrors ripped from our collective imaginations, remnants of every mythology across the world. And some were like nothing anyone had ever dreamed up, even in their worst nightmares. Now, the luckiest Cits live in enclosed communities, behind walls that keep them safe from the hideous monsters fighting to break through.

Same tired tropes.
Revisado: 07-24-24
It was written well enough that it was an enjoyable read, but it was predictable and a little boring. This is one of many Mary Jane, country bumpkin going to the big city books. She is SO talented and so humble, and SO friendly, and SO cute, and just perfect. The boys love her, the girls want to be her. course there is a set up for her enemy, who hates her for a nonsensical reason, to become her love interest in the next book. not one original idea in this book. Perfect for a 12 yr old

Here is the novel that will be forever considered a triumph of the imagination. Set on the desert planet Arrakis, Dune is the story of the boy Paul Atreides, who would become the mysterious man known as Maud'dib. He would avenge the traitorous plot against his noble family and would bring to fruition humankind's most ancient and unattainable dream.

Revisado: 03-31-24
Erikson makes unlikeable characters interesting. Everyone character is well thought out and very well rounded. Erikson can sometimes be verbose and it takes forever to get to the point, but this book was perfect.

Historia
Ryana, a worthless girl-child, is sold to a mysterious woman who takes her to the home of the Shadow Sisters who are prized for their abilities as spies and assassins. She survives years of training in spite of being unconventional: adopting poisonous bats as familiars - something no one else would dare to do; choosing the blow dart as her weapon of choice - a weapon the Sisters don't teach; and relying on intuition rather than logic. As she completes her training, the Shadow Sisters are under attack and send Ryana out to find out who is killing Sisters and why.

I don't like books where the protagonist is always winning and figuring stuff out with no real struggle or failures. A novice spy and assassin but she manages to save the day every time. F**ing Mary Sue

Historia
There's an underground black market for arcane things. Akin to the trade in rhino horns or tiger bones, this network traffics in remains of gryphons, faeries, goblins, and other fantastic creatures. When her fiance Vince goes missing, Angela Gough, an American criminology student, discovers he was a part of this secretive trade. It's a big-money business-shadowy, brutal, and sometimes fatal. As the trail leads her deeper into London's dark side, she crosses paths with a crime lord whose life is dedicated to collecting such relics.

This is like a rip off from Neil Gaiman but not as well executed. The main character is kind of annoying and the plot could've been more interesting. I tuned out but didn't miss anything several times. Will not bother with any sequels.

Some say that to change the world you must first burn it down. Now that belief will be tested in the crucible of revolution: The Breakers and Burners have seized the levers of power, the smoke of riots has replaced the smog of industry, and all must submit to the wisdom of crowds. With nothing left to lose, Citizen Brock is determined to become a new hero for the new age, while Citizeness Savine must turn her talents from profit to survival before she can claw her way to redemption.

Great Ending for a great trilogy!
Revisado: 09-21-21
the book started out a little slow. but Joe Abercrombie never fails to deliver. unlike a lot of books in his genre there is never any unbelievable deus ex machina. but in this book thankfully the characters I wanted to live lived except for one. I like how there are no final happy endings and everyone has to accept their faults and delusions(or not) and carry on like in real life. I'm glad Baez finally got pushed to the side. But never count him out.
