It started out great but then regressed into retelling the story over and over. I didn’t get it.

Historia
Paris in 1895: Alfred Dreyfus, a young Jewish officer, has just been convicted of treason, sentenced to life imprisonment at Devil's Island, and stripped of his rank in front of a baying crowd of 20,000. Among the witnesses to his humiliation is Georges Picquart, the ambitious, intellectual, recently promoted head of the counterespionage agency that Dreyfus had passed secrets to the Germans. At first, Picquart firmly believes in Dreyfus' guilt. But it is not long after Dreyfus is delivered to his desolate prison that Picquart stumbles on information that leads him to suspect that there is still a spy at large in the French military.

A Fascinating Story Told by An Excellent Narrator
Revisado: 05-07-14
This was one of my most enjoyable audiobooks. The story was so interesting and almost completely based on fact. The narrator had a perfect French accent and a wonderful way of expressing the emotions of the story. What an actor! After I finished, I read up on the facts of the case on the internet. I highly recommend this book.

Narrator Lee Ruins Story
Revisado: 02-12-14
What could Jo Nesbø have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
I've read most of the Harry Hole books (and loved them) but this one ranks towards the bottom of the list in terms of the story line. Not enough Harry in the book for me.
What didn’t you like about John Lee’s performance?
But the worst part was John Lee's performance. His interpretation of the female characters is so artificial and sing-songy. I just can't listen to another Jo Nesbo book narrated by him. What a tragedy to have lost Robin Sachs.

Apart from a shaky eyewitness report of the abduction, Police Commandant Camille Verhoeven has nothing to go on: no suspect, no leads, and no family or friends anxious to find a missing loved one. The diminutive and brilliant detective knows from bitter experience the urgency of finding the missing woman as quickly as possible - but first he must understand more about her.

Historia
Helene Wecker's dazzling debut novel tells the story of two supernatural creatures who appear mysteriously in 1899 New York. Chava is a golem, a creature made of clay, brought to life by a strange man who dabbles in dark Kabbalistic magic. When her master dies at sea on the voyage from Poland, she is unmoored and adrift as the ship arrives in New York Harbor. Ahmad is a jinni, a being of fire, born in the ancient Syrian Desert. Trapped in an old copper flask by a Bedouin wizard centuries ago, he is released accidentally by a tinsmith in a Lower Manhattan shop.

Top of My List of Favorite Books
Revisado: 07-26-13
What did you like best about this story?
I just finished reading and listening to The Golem and the Jinni. What an inventive, beautifully written and compelling novel! I loved every minute of it. All the characters came to life as completely believable people. And the juxtaposition of the personalities of Amad and Chava was so interesting. I just did not want this book to end. I'm making it my selection for our book club in 2014 and have recommended it to everyone I know who loves to read a great story.
What about George Guidall’s performance did you like?
The Audible.com edition with George Guidell narrating was perfect. That was for listening in my car. Continuing to read the Kindle edition when at home was great, too. The Golem and the Jinni is now at the top of my list of all time favorite books

Don't Bother
Revisado: 08-13-11
I, too, was looking forward to listening to this book. Loved Bel Canto. But this one really disappointed. The overall concept of the plot was interesting, but the details as it unfolded were not believable. I found Marina to be wishy-washy and naive. She really irritated me! And Hope Davis's narrative style added to the disappointing experience. Her voice was very flat and uninteresting. I plodded on to the end just to find out what happened, but cannot recommend this book to anyone.

Disappointing after a great review
Revisado: 02-26-11
This book got a great review in The New York Times so I was really looking forward to listening to it. It started off strong, but I was put off by the outlandish voices and accents the narrator used for most of the characters in the book. The only one who sounded real was Jimmy Littlemore. All the rest of the voices sounded like real stereotypes and significantly detracted from the story line. I stayed with it to the end just to find out what happened, but wouldn't really recommend the audio book. Maybe much better to actually read.

Historia
The messages waiting for Henry Pierce when he plugs in his new phone clearly aren't intended for him. They indicate something has gone terribly wrong for a woman named Lilly. Pierce probes, investigates, and then tumbles through a hole, leaving behind a life driven by work to track down and help a woman he's never met. Connelly's latest is "a grabber from the beginning...utterly compelling."

Yes, our hero is an idiot. What happened to Michael Connelly? The Harry Bosch books are so well done. I couldn't believe this came from the same author. Don't waste your time.
