Historia
Deborah Harkness’s sparkling debut, A Discovery of Witches, has brought her into the spotlight and galvanized fans around the world. In this tale of passion and obsession, Diana Bishop, a young scholar and a descendant of witches, discovers a long-lost and enchanted alchemical manuscript, Ashmole 782, deep in Oxford's Bodleian Library. Its reappearance summons a fantastical underworld, which she navigates with her leading man, vampire geneticist Matthew Clairmont.

I'll be honest, I didn't finish it. it's like Twilight for grownups except I swear Twilight was better. it's just boring, and the main character is so frustratingly inept while constantly talking about what a tough woman she is. File it under another hugely hyped book that I just do not get (Looking at you Court of Roses and Thorns or whatever).
The audiobook reader did a good job with what she was given.

Historia
This is a land of long memory and hidden corners, a land that had known Vlad the Impaler, a land from whose churchyards the shades creep. When Queen Marie calls, Mary Russell and Sherlock Holmes are as dubious as they are reluctant. But a young girl is involved, and a beautiful queen. Surely it won't take long to shine light on this unlikely case of what would seem to be strigoi? Or, as they are known in the West...vampires.

good book but who is choosing these covers?
Revisado: 03-04-22
I'm a fan of this series, they've been smart comfort reading for me since high school. I like the narrator as well, and it's maybe not the best Mary Russel but it's still a fun time.
Now for a mini rant - who is that supposed to be in the cover? A petite conventionally attractive (no spectacles) red headed flapper does not appear in this book (or any other Mary Russell book I can think of). Not only does it totally misrepresent the tone of this series, it doesn't even match a character in it. The cover markets these books as significantly more silly than they are. It's annoying.

Historia
There are places in the world where darkness rules, where it's unwise to walk. Sunshine knew that. But there hadn't been any trouble out at the lake for years, and she needed a place to be alone for a while. Unfortunately, she wasn't alone. She never heard them coming. Of course you don't, when they're vampires.

One of the best books I've ever read
Revisado: 05-10-21
I love this book. It is a fascinating, stream of consciousness look at the inner life of a young woman going through something incredibly challenging, that thing just happens to be vampires. Some folks seem to be annoyed it wasn't more romantic, but the thing is it is not a romance book. There is some incidental romance that is part of the protagonists life, but it is not really her focus, she's got bigger stuff going on. I think it's actually one of the books strengths.
This book also has all the usual Robin McKinley strengths: strong world building, sentences that never end but somehow you love it, and an actually interesting female protagonist.

Historia
Looting - a crowd of people publicly, openly, and directly seizing goods - is one of the more extreme actions that can take place in the midst of social unrest. Even self-identified radicals distance themselves from looters, fearing that violent tactics reflect badly on the broader movement. But Vicky Osterweil argues that stealing goods and destroying property are direct, pragmatic strategies of wealth redistribution and improving life for the working class - not to mention the brazen messages these methods send to the police and the state.
