Reality in a short, imaginatively-written book.

Man! That was one of the best books I’ve ever read. It was like smacking hard into the brick wall of reality. So much makes sense now—about myself, my family, relationships, religion, history, politics, our country, the world. I think I’ll listen to it again right away, because I don’t ever want to view things the old false way again. Sincere thanks to the author and his Author for this powerful, uncomfortable, much-needed book.

Had to take it in twice in a row.

I tried reading St. John of the Cross once and found that I was neither intellectually or spiritually prepared for his Ascent or Dark Night. After listening to St. Terese's Story of a Soul and Come Be My Light from the writings of Blessed Mother Teresa (both through audible.com), I found this book which explained simply and beautifully the spiritual journey to God based on the writings of these and other Saints. I strongly recommend this book to anyone who has recognized in himself or herself even the slightest desire for God. (The four star performance was only because the narrator sometimes mixes pronouns or reads incorrectly based on a comparison with the eBook version.)

Surprisingly risqué

Have you listened to any of Nicola Barber’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Yes. Nicola Barber is a tremendous talent. I love her reading of the Molly Murphy mystery series by Rhys Bowen!

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Call the Midwife?

Not a scene so much as a shift in the integrity of the story itself. Somewhere in the middle of the book, the reader/listener experiences a violent turn from what had thus far been an honest yet morally-modest account of the narrator's journey of growth as a midwife. After the introduction of the character Mary, the story becomes a sexually graphic one. The BBC television series upholds its integrity and still manages to convey Mary's story. I only wish the author had chosen to do the same.

I'm exchanging it without finishing it. It's not as if I can't handle the "mature" content, it's a choice to maintain whatever innocence I still may have. In my opinion, innocence is beauty. <3
