I so very much enjoyed this book! The story was at times heartbreaking and at other times uplifting. The narration was absolutely perfect and not overdone. Favorite book (so far) for 2025!

I’ve always loved Alex Kershaw‘s books. He’s a great storyteller and this book is no different. I learned things about Patton that I didn’t know, along with several facts about his relationships with Bradley and Ike on and off the battlefield. Thanks to Alex for putting his special touch to a story about a great American general!

I’ve always been a fan of Kate Morten and this book did not disappoint. Her way of storytelling is simple, concise, and descriptive and takes you right along with each of the characters. I’m also very impressed with her research and all of the details she included.

The story seemed promising, but unfortunately this book turned into one of the more boring and tedious books I’ve listened to. The lecture on economics almost made me return the book. The precise diction that the narrator used in the last section of the book seemed overdone and was distracting to me. This made it difficult for me to listen to.

I love the idea of this book, but I found it difficult to listen to in some parts due to the sad stories of some of the characters.

I’ve always loved Hayley Mills. Hearing her tell her story was such a treat. I love her voice and all of the stories she told surrounding her career. I’m so glad she wrote this book!

Well-written and read. I’ve always been a fan of Andrew McCarthy, and this book did not disappoint. It brought back a lot of great memories. I highly recommend this for anyone who is a fan of 80s movies :)

Alex Kershaw once again uses his great storytelling skills to bring to life another historical event in World War II; the D Day landings. In many respects, this book helped connect the dots for me as to what happened on D Day and how all of the different elements of the Allied Armed Forces came together on 6 June 1944. As with Alex's 'The Bedford Boys', I felt like I got to know. at least on some level, each of the heroes he talks about. His vivid descriptions of Brittany and Normandy in France (along with some recollections from my visit to that area of France in 2001), helped me to visualize the beaches and the terrain that these heroes fought and died on. Paul Michael's narration using British, Scottish, and American accents helped to distinguish each of the characters so their stories were distinct from each other. All of these elements came together to tell a concise and compelling story about what happened on that fateful day in June 1944. I highly recommend this book to all history buffs and especially to all of my fellow Alex Kershaw fans!

At the risk of sounding too 'Jerry Maguire', Alex Kershaw had me at 'The Bedford Boys' and I've been of huge fan of his ever since! 'Avenue of Spies' tells the story of an American doctor and his family (wife and son) who, living just steps away from the center of Nazi evil in Paris, became part of the French Resistance. The story is told mainly through the eyes of a 16 year old, now an old man, who loved and worshipped his father and all the good that he stood for. It shares some details about their daily life under Nazi occupation, and without giving away too much (no spoilers here!), explains what happened to them as a result of their choice to fight. And something I really liked about this book is that Alex puts their story into context by explaining what was happening in Paris and how the City of Light managed to avoid total destruction. (No Herr Hitler, Paris is NOT burning!!) I listened to the audio version of this book (great narrator!) that included an interview with Alex where he offered some insight as to how this story came to be. If you're interested in World War II history and enjoy reading about ordinary people doing extraordinary things, I highly recommend adding 'Avenue of Spies' to your reading list!
