I felt a love/hate relationship with this book. There were times when I felt the writer thought the reader would just go along with whatever but I could not stop listening.
From a storyline standpoint I thought the writer created an expectation that kept my interest but I struggled early on in the book as some aspects seemed too ridiculous. I continued listening and the book did not disappoint.
Hearing the author speak at the end of the audiobook book brought full clarity for this listener!

This book was both engaging and challenging to hear. It was engaging from the cultural aspect and the added voice of Ivy’s internal dialogue.

Challenging because it does not have one likable character in the cast of characters.

I cannot believe this book was published

I read this author’s books in the 90’s so I am shocked that this book was published and supported by audible.
There is nothing of substance to the story or characters in this story.
It reads like a bad episode on a daytime soap opera that just gets worse.
Could not finish!

Surprisingly Amazing

The beginning of this book was slow but the author developed each character with enough intrigue to keep me listening until I needed to hear the end of the story!
I wonder if there will be a book 2?

Kept me guessing!

I enjoyed this listed for a lot of reasons The subject matter is relevant, the characters were flawed but their strengths were believable, and the ending was plausible.
I’ve read/listened to too many books with a ridiculous ending and wondered why the writer did not put more time or attention to how the book ends.

A true love story

This book began so slowly but the slow pace set the stage for patience of the most beautiful love story I have ever listened to!
The character development from youth through early adulthood was believable and so intimate.
Shilo’s description of Carey, including his moles, was endearing as was his description of her hips, height, and hair.
I loved that Carey was committed to the Navy as it must have seemed like a world away from the home he grew up in and yet it is not so easy to leave all behind!

I absolutely loved this story!

I will be forever changed by what I read regarding this family and their experience with the criminal justice system. Unfortunately, I’ve heard Tom’s experience before. I am encouraged by his resilience to move on and see things through as well as his sister’s support and willingness to carry the torch.

Difficult to follow

I started this book over several times as it was difficult to follow the story, characters and storylines.
I’m glad I finished the book but It was challenging at times.
