Historical Fiction at its best
Revisado: 02-03-25
The amount of historical context presented in this book is staggering and wonderful. What a fantastic work. I loved it from start to finish. The end is predictable but still a good time.

A really great piece
Revisado: 01-27-25
The voice actor makes odd choices when voicing women. He makes them all sound wistful and flippant when they're clearly direct and intelligent. He's a got this really nice way of word-vomiting asides, though, which I found really engaging and often kind of adorable.
I love Duane. I was bummed when he died in 1960 and am so glad to hear from him again. I love Dan Simmons' writing style. This is a great read and I would return to this series as many times as he lets me.

But what UPS delivers to his door in a black heart-shaped box is no imaginary or metaphorical ghost. It's the real thing.

Spooky, cheesy, eye-rolling fun
Revisado: 11-30-24
The voice actor sounds like he has a fantasy about hyper-masculine musicians. It's fine. This is a fun lil jaunt through the supernatural south. I really like Mary Beth. It's not GREAT. But it was good enough and I had a good time with it.

Great story, not-so-great voice actor
Revisado: 10-22-24
The previous booms in this series were voiced by a different actor and his character choices and intonation should have been treated as the standard for subsequent books. This actor has re-characterized almost every main player in the story and it's distracting. Hammersmith sounds almost Scottish, not Welsh. Day came through as a good-natured man in previous books but in this one he's not as likable. The actor also does this very specific lilt at the ends of his questions that are incredibly cliche. The action descriptions are much too exaggerated as well. The previous voice actor did a phenomenal job and I miss him! The voice is so important for audiobooks and if The Yard had been read by this guy, I don't think I'd have made it to Black Country.

Sucks
Revisado: 09-02-24
This entire book is written in one of the most ham-fisted ways I have ever encountered. The naming of the main character is so obvious that it's annoying. There are like 250 chapters which is insane. Symbolism so obvious that it's almost rude. Lots of cliches. LOTS. Excessive historical context and a few glaring inaccuracies. Did promposals exist before social media? How does obvious manslaughter get classified as murder? Enormous subjects are casually mentioned like afterthoughts. The love stories are all trauma bonding. It's just one stupid or ridiculous thing after another. This is clearly a corporate-funded vehicle for this author and likely for some actors as well when the movie inevitably comes out. It's just so bad, you guys,

Historia
For four aging men in the terror-stricken town of Milburn, New York, an act inadvertently carried out in their youth has come back to haunt them. Now they are about to learn what happens to those who believe they can bury the past - and get away with murder. Peter Straub's classic best seller is a work of "superb horror" ( Washington Post Book World) that, like any good ghost story, stands the test of time - and conjures our darkest fears and nightmares.

It took me years to finally invest in the opening sequence because I'm sensitive to children and stodgy old men are boooooooring. But I finally dug in and am so glad I did! What a great story. Female characters are pretty flat but that's no surprise.

Historia
When she arrives at the hall, shaken by an unsettling disturbance that occurred during her travels, she is greeted by the two children now in her care, Isabella and Eustace. There is no adult present to represent her mysterious employer, and the children offer no explanation. Later that night in her room, another terrifying experience further reinforces the sense that something is very wrong. From the moment Eliza rises the following morning, her every step seems dogged by a malign presence that lives within Gaudlin's walls.

A Spooky Little Tale
Revisado: 06-04-24
Pros: the voice actor has a very pleasant tone and accent. The plot is really interesting and I was looking forward to the time I got to spend with the story.
Cons: the pace is very quick so I played it at 85% speed which made certain moments a little odd-sounding. The story is a bit anachronistic in that it uses modern discourse surrounding trauma and abuse, which would have been unheard of in context. I also think the final church scene was completely out-of-pocket and was not at all believable to have taken place in Victorian England. Finally, one of the greatest parts of that time was the complexity of wardrobe. There is zero description of clothing, undergarments, dressing procedures, or grooming routines. That's simply a missed opportunity and a huge oversight on the part of the author.

Compelling
Revisado: 05-27-24
What's interesting about this particular work is that the protagonist is not super likable. Her judgment is questionable and her reactions to experiences are, at times, unbelievable (as far as how I view another people and their humanity is concerned). Additionally the voice actor sounds very old and when the protagonist is a very young girl and young woman, you would expect her to sound like a young girl or young woman. As the story progresses and the protagonist ages it's less of an issue until she voices other young people and they sound young. I'm not really sure why she made that particular character choice but it was distracting and toward the middle of the book kind of annoying.
This book is beautifully written. It's made me think about a lot of things I wouldn't normally and I appreciate that. Because of this, I would recommend it. I'm not sure if I will continue with this series because I don't like the voice actor very much, and, I'm concerned about even more unlikable protagonists. I'm moving on.

Many Hours of Processing the Death of a Child
Revisado: 05-04-24
This book is beautifully written and performed. I can see how it won awards. If you're a highly sensitive person, though, you might want to keep it moving. I found the long, drawn-out, detailed description of watching your own child die and then processing all that grief to be *a little much.* This story is DARK and it really wallows around in its misery. There's nothing wrong with that, but this story was ruining my mood and casting a dark cloud over my days. I didn't listen to the last 2 hours because my heart can't handle it.
