"The Playground" was part of the first hardcover edition of Ray Bradbury's legendary work Fahrenheit 451, published in 1953. In the story, Charles Underhill is a widower who will do anything to protect his young son Jim from the horrors of the playground - a playground which he and the boy pass by daily and the tumult of which, the activity, brings back to Charles the anguish of his own childhood.

Historia
Zachary Quinto - best known for his role as the Nimoy-approved Spock in the recent Star Trek reboot and the menacing, power-stealing serial killer, Sylar, in Heroes - brings his well-earned sci-fi credentials and simmering intensity to this audio-exclusive novella from master storyteller John Scalzi. One day, not long from now, it becomes almost impossible to murder anyone - 999 times out of a thousand, anyone who is intentionally killed comes back. How? We don't know.

Brilliantly written and narrated
Revisado: 10-13-16
I absolutely loved this short story and hope Scalzi will write more in this universe, even with these characters later. It has a great concept: for unknown reasons, murdered people awaken, unharmed and naked, in their beds after their untimely deaths. In this new world, in which war and crime have drastically declined or disappeared, Dispatchers must help regulate deaths and "reset" those who may otherwise die of natural causes (if someone's dying from an accidental fall, they reset the person by well, murdering them) or in the city's dark side, brutal fight clubs. So this idea provides the basis of the mysterious disappearance of a Dispatcher and what happens when death goes wrong.
I'm a huge Scalzi fan and his newest story doesn't disappoint!

loved being behind the scenes with the crew though I felt like some of it was stilted and repeated several times. nevertheless, as a fan, I overlooked this and just enjoyed the ride (and then had to watch the movie multiple times).

Historia
Aged Mother Jilo is wise in the ways of magic...but once upon a time, she was just a girl. 1950s Georgia: King Cotton has fallen. Savannah is known as the "beautiful woman with a dirty face," its stately elegance faded by neglect, its soul withering from racial injustice and political corruption. Young Jilo - fiercely independent, intelligent, and ambitious, but thwarted by Savannah's maddeningly genteel version of bigotry - finds herself forced to embrace a dark power that has pursued her family for generations, an ancient magic that may prove her salvation.

Perfect addition to the series
Revisado: 07-19-16
Mia Ellis is the perfect compliment to JD Horn's book; together they bring Jilo's story to vivid life. Jilo is my favorite character in the Witching Savannah series and it was wonderful to see her explored in depth, from Mother Wills' loving protection to Jilo coming into her own. First we follow May, her grandmother, and her relationship with magic and raising her granddaughters. A villain is introduced and we see him again in Jilo's life. (Not sharing more than that - spoilers, sweetie!) The second half is Jilo's story, her ambition to become a doctor, meeting Guy and the Taylors, and her powers.
Took off half a star: My only complaint is the villain's death is almost anticlimactic, but taken in context, it works.
While this is just a companion book, I would recommend this first and then the series. The Line and the source of the magic she and Mercy Taylor share may make more sense in how it's introduced in this book than in the series. This book could also be read alone, but I don't think you'll be able to resist reading the others.

Revisado: 03-24-16
TGR did a masterful job narrating this epic tale by Larry Correia. I loved TGR's performance of the Red Rising trilogy so I decided to give this series a shot. I'm so glad I did! The story follows the saga of Ashok, a Protector, who learns his life as he knows it is a lie. The story is well-developed, perfectly paced, and has great action sequences. I loved it and plan to try more of LC's work.

Brilliant
Revisado: 04-30-15
Well-written, fast paced, and interesting. Dick Hill and Connelly make a great team as Hill does a marvelous job bringing the book to life. He's one of the best narrators I've heard, and I listen to a least 5 books a month. He IS Bosch. I've been a Connelly fan for a while; now I must have all the Hill narrated books for my collection! Yes, this book was written 20+ years ago and the tech reflects that but Bosch is easily translated to modern times (see Amazon Prime for the show). It's a little predictable; still worth the read!
