Shame and blame the victims

This book goes too far in shaming and blaming people for dementia, cancer, other ailments. Perhaps some have cured their various diseases with positive affirmations, but not considering genetics, environment and science, this is an over-simplified and dangerous message. There's nothing wrong with positive thinking and loving yourself, but this book and the mini-empire of minions who send similar messages are not helping people. I suppose that humans (and animals) who die just didn't do it right.

This is truly one of the most important books one could read. It's a book to come back to during the highs and lows of life, and I can't recommend it more highly. This is my second time listening to it. It's profound, honest, kind, and a beautiful guide for how to live your life, no matter what life has in store for you.

I should have paid more attention to the critical reviews, but I took a chance. Suffice it to say, this was a shallow read, and certainly missed the point of the actual courage, bravery, and strength of Farrah Fawcett during her journey with cancer. This story, as the title clearly states, is not about that. It's about her friend's version which, with all due respect to the work she does now for the Foundation, is not a story that has any relevance to the fight against cancer. Even as a caregiver myself, it just didn't resonate.

Nine + months after losing my husband, I still crave books what show me how others are coping with loss, and to give me perspective, answers, and experiences. It's different for everyone, but few of the books give the type of qualitative data that this one does. And let's face it - many of us are cerebrally looking for answers to issues that are only treated emotionally. This book gives a healthy mix of both, in my opinion and in my experience. I thought the narration was effective, but I liked to take notes so it wasn't something that I could listen to while driving - I needed to be able to jot things down. Thanks to Dr. Shulman for sharing her difficult experience given her unique perspective. It was a great comfort to me on this journey.

This story was beautiful and touching. I have read many books recently about being widowed and here, the author was able to convey the story of their love, who they were, and where she is now. The "three marriages" that she describes is right on - their original marriage, the marriage that involved his cancer journey, and the path that she is on right now, living life with all that has brought her to this point. I enjoyed the way the story weaved together bringing those different phases of life in to paint the full picture. I saw a few reviews that said the book was too long, however this is a story to be honored and is authentic in its telling. This is life, not a 2-hour action movie. I believe it deserved to be told in all of its color, with its tragedies and triumphs. This story will stay with me, and I wish the author well as she moves through each day, one step at a time.

This memoir and its heartfelt, beautiful narration, will stay with me for a long time to come. Alexander's words capture a stage of loss that seems to defy words for most of us. My heart is filled with love and compassion for her with this loss, and I admire her strength and courage to face her grief, sit with it, and walk through it. I will be revisiting this book on my own journey, and sharing it with others who can gain from her kind insights in the most difficult times.

If this is what life is asking of you, to live with deep loss, this is a great book to help you cope, get perspective, cry, and yes, laugh. I found the book first and liked Nora so much (it felt like she was a friend that I loved to hear tell stories) that I found more of her work, including her podcast Terrible, Thanks for Asking. Nora is a born storyteller with a great sense of humor. Life is hard, and together, we hope to find a way forward.
