Historia
Rock and roll in the BC (Before Cooper) era was a tamer, milder world. In Who I Really Am, Cooper’s latest addition to Audible’s Words + Music series, we learn how the boa-wearing (not the feathered kind) maestro arrived at a show and sound - let’s call it AC for After Cooper - that has entertained millions of kids while terrifying parents in equal measure. Cooper drew inspiration from Saturday matinee horror movies, applied a "no such thing as too much" attitude, and hitched it to a kick-ass rock and roll band.

Meh.
Revisado: 10-01-22
I’ve been an Alice fan since the late 70s. My favorite album was Alice Cooper goes to hell. I used to blast that album till the windows rattled and the neighbors complained. I guess having the mystery is better than hearing about the reality. I still like Alice a lot. But after getting into about 30 minutes, I just couldn’t stay interested. They were a bunch of kids/musicians having adventures, meeting their idols and doing fun stuff. That’s all right. It’s an old story and it gets a little boring.

OK, Audible, what's the deal?
Revisado: 01-06-20
As far as I'm concerned, The Martian is one of those books that didn't need to be re-recorded. If you asked me, I would have suggested Rendezvous With Rama as a more deserving candidate. Having the HAL 9000 read a book just doesn't work. That being said, Will Wheaton is capable with a pleasing voice and good speech technique. I think he is at his best at first person narration with limited characters and personalitles. He is a little weak is when he is portraying more that a couple different characters. I found this story hard to follow due to the lack of differentiation between personalities; even though I'm familiar with the book.
Also, I find it interesting that the version with R.C. Bray doens't seem to be offered anymore. I'm guessing there's some sort of falling out between Bray and Audible? They still offer other books with his performances so, who knows?
One thing Wheaton does bring to the story is Watney's nerdiness. If I remember correctly, Watney is a lifelong nerd, slightly out of shape and pretty unprepared for his ordeal. That's one thing that makes the story enjoyable. He rises to his challenge. Unlike the movie, he is not Jason Bourne.
In the future, I would not avoid a book read by Wheaton and I look forward to seeing what else he does. Will, if somehow you read this, I like ya. Would love to have a beer with you, but in terms of this story, you had some big shoes to fill.

It Gets Tedious . Possible Spoiler...
Revisado: 12-22-19
As another reviewer previously stated, it's a combination of Dr. Moreau and Rambo; or Rambo light. I made it to about 2 1/2 hours before the end and couldn't take any more. I gave this book a try because I do enjoy the readings of R.C. Bray. After The Martian, (with its own faults), I sought out other books that he was reading for consideration. I very much enjoyed the Expeditionary Force series largely because of him. For several years, it has seemed like he's been a little selective on what he does and that's been a big help in selecting listening material. But, to get back to the book itself, this is basically mad scientist, son of mad scientist or grandson of mad scientist carrying out his progenator's work. He's just as mad as daddy/grandaddy with his own little Igor thrown in. If you're old enough to have watched the Saturday afternoon horror movies in black and white, this, if it was a movie with Buddy Baer and some triffids thrown in, this would fit right in.

There is no one like James Michener.
Revisado: 11-15-19
I first read this book when I was about 14 or 15 years old. Several adults in my life had read it and I wanted to see what all
the fuss was about. The first 100 pages were torture for a teenager, but for some reason, I stayed with it and when it got to the
natives of Bora Bora, I was hooked. I had never before considered the continuity of successive generations of humanity. It grabbed me in a way that no book had ever done. As a teenager in school, I hated history, but I loved THIS! For many years after, Michener was one of my favorite authors. I went on to reading The Source. The Covenant, Centennial and others. Fifty years later, I still have not read all of his books and I'm beginning to pick them up again in audiobook form. In short, you can't go wrong with Michener.
Now, as to the point others have made: Is Larry Cheevers a great reader? His voice is clear and easily understandable. Are there other narrators that I wish were reading? You bet. But given the slim likelihood of Audible re-recording these books with someone like George Guidel, Will Patton, Stephen Rudniki, Lorilei King or their peers, don't skip these books because of the narration. Michener's genius to entertain and inform comes through regardless. He is a master story teller in every sense of the word.

Now I remember....
Revisado: 09-05-19
I purchased the first two of this series a few years ago. Now I remember why I didn't continue with the series. I love the modern western genre but this just wasn't quite there for me. I guess my biggest beef is with the antagonists. They are just a little too much over the top in what they say and do. The explanation of "target saturation" just didn't ring true for me. I could see that happening in a high stress war situation, but not in a civilian setting with many other characters around to see the situation as Joe Pickett saw it. I just don't believe that Joe was the only one. I may try one more book in the series to see if it becomes more palatable.

I had no idea of Mr. Noah's background. The first I ever heard of him was when he was to replace John Stewart. I didn't think he'd last. While I don't get to watch the show regularly and just see occasional clips and comments, it didn't take me long to see that he is worth watching and listening to . The book is well worth the time. It's wonderful, terrible, funny and heartbreaking.

It sounded like Sci Fi.....
Revisado: 10-14-17
I was, and still am, looking for some good sci fi and this just wasn't it. It's not that I'm totaly against fantasy, but this just wasn't what I was looking for. I started over listening to this more times than I can remember and it just puts me to sleep. If I hadn't taken so long to decide that I didn't like it, I would have turned it back in. The premise is interesting: A portal that takes people, one way, six million years into earth's past. When they get there, they find that an alien race has basically set up shop and enslaves the humans coming through who are looking for simpler life. Then we get shape changers, fairies, and what not. Really?
So many other avenues to explore and the author goes with the magical? If this is what you're looking for enjoy. It's fairly well written, but not sci-fi .

Charley sees dead people. That's right, she sees dead people. And it's her job to convince them to "go into the light." But when these very dead people have died under less than ideal circumstances (i.e., murder), sometimes they want Charley to bring the bad guys to justice. Complicating matters are the intensely hot dreams she's been having about an Entity who has been following her all her life...and it turns out he might not be dead after all. In fact, he might be something else entirely.

Made two attempts at this a few years apart. No dice. I'm no prude, but the erotic scenes seem out of place and forced. The writing is decent, but the characters need a little more depth to be interesting. Lorilei King is one of my favored readers and it's her voice that kept me going as long as I did. In the end, though, I just kept falling asleep.

Great Book, reader, not so much.
Revisado: 02-19-14
I thought it was just me, but after reading other reviews, I see that I wasn't alone in being annoyed with the reader. To be fair, I am getting used to him as the story progresses, but I will look out for the name "David Chase" as I order other books and probably avoid them in audio form. I read Shogun 30 years ago and thoroughly enjoyed it. I was looking for a different experience with this book and that's what I got. The one thing that makes the reader acceptable, is that his voice, after Blackthorn encounters the Japanese and their culture, actually conveys the kind of foreigness that a person like Blackthorn in this situation might perceive in his initial clash with Asian customs and mores'. That's the best positive perspective that I can think of.

Historia
From the end of the 18th century, Americans traveled west to find new homes and new lands. They brought with them the magics of plain people. It is from these roots of the American dream that award-winning writer Orson Scott Card has crafted what the Charlotte Observer called "a uniquely American fantasy." Using the lore and the folk magic of the men and women who settled a continent, and the beliefs of the tribes who were here before them, Card has created an alternate frontier America.

I Was Ready For the Story to End.
Revisado: 05-24-13
The Crystal City is probably my least favorite of the Alvin Maker series. It got to the point where any obstacle was overcome by Alvin's, or somebody else's knack. It eliminates any tension or sense of danger to the characters when one knows that all they have to do is run real fast, make a fog, or miraculously heal someone. Even though he was very infuriating, and mostly downright stupid, Calvin became more interesting than his brother Al. Toward the end of the book, I really didn't care if they made the Crystal City or not.
