Historia
Here is the story of Klara, an Artificial Friend with outstanding observational qualities, who, from her place in the store, watches carefully the behavior of those who come in to browse, and of those who pass on the street outside. She remains hopeful that a customer will soon choose her. Klara and the Sun is a thrilling book that offers a look at our changing world through the eyes of an unforgettable narrator, and one that explores the fundamental question: What does it mean to love?

A disappointment.
Revisado: 08-21-23
I liked the premise and got drawn in by the character of Klara but the story went nowhere. I kept waiting for something significant to happen but the story just fizzled out. The narration was annoying and amateurish at times. Overall, it was a big disappointment. It is no Remains of the Day, unfortunately.

Historia
John Fowles’s The Magus was a literary landmark of the 1960s. Nicholas Urfe goes to a Greek island to teach at a private school and becomes enmeshed in curious happenings at the home of a mysterious Greek recluse, Maurice Conchis. Are these events, involving attractive young English sisters, just psychological games, or an elaborate joke, or more? Reality shifts as the story unfolds. The Magus reflected the issues of the 1960s perfectly, and it continues to create tension and concern today.

Magnificent!
Revisado: 07-21-23
Perfect combination of great writer, great story, and great narrator. This was my third time round with this book and I enjoyed more than ever. I read it in my youth, middle age and now in old age. This latest reading (listening) is by far the best experience. It’s a long story but my interest never flagged for a moment. It’s a classic.

Historia
If anyone could be considered a Russian counterpart to the infamous British double-agent Kim Philby, it was Oleg Gordievsky. The son of two KGB agents and the product of the best Soviet institutions, the savvy, sophisticated Gordievsky grew to see his nation's communism as both criminal and philistine. He took his first posting for Russian intelligence in 1968 and eventually became the Soviet Union's top man in London, but from 1973 on he was secretly working for MI6.

A genuine thriller
Revisado: 02-05-23
If this was a fictional account, it might seem unrealistic. It certainly proves the adage that truth is stranger than fiction. An amazing story that is superbly written and narrated. So good, I listened to it twice.

Michael Palin brings the fascinating story of the Erebus and its occupants to life, from its construction as a bomb vessel in 1826 through the flagship years of James Clark Ross’s Antarctic expedition and finally to Sir John Franklin’s quest for the holy grail of navigation - a route through the Northwest Passage, where the ship disappeared into the depths of the sea for more than 150 years. It was rediscovered under the arctic waters in 2014.

September 1989. In the tense final days before the fall of the Berlin Wall, East Germany's Communist government is on the brink of collapse. Even the Stasi, once a notoriously fearsome intelligence agency, can't stop the rebellion. In a desperate play for advantage, they send former foreign agent Dr. Rudi Rosenharte to Trieste to rendezvous with his old lover and fellow agent, Annalise Schering. They believe Annalise has vital intelligence. The only problem: Rudi knows she's dead. After seeing her lying in her own bloodied bathwater, he kept her suicide a secret.

Good story if a bit confusing at times.
Revisado: 12-20-22
Good story. A bit confusing at times due to so many characters. A slow start but worth persevering. The narration falters now and then but it must have been tough trying to vary all those German accents. Good surprises at the end if a bit far fetched.

Wonderful!
Revisado: 03-01-22
I had enjoyed this book back in the ‘70s and often thought about it since. In recent years I mostly “read” audio books and I realize that I am at the mercy of the narrator. Even a great book can be ruined by poor narration. So I was hesitant about this recording as I was fearful it might spoil the good opinion I had of it. To my great surprise, it did the opposite. Sean Barrett’s narration was perfect and left me with even more admiration for this great classic. I could hardly take a break from listening. I could not recommend it more.

An instant classic
Revisado: 10-26-21
Five years ago, when I read Amor Towles‘ wonderful novel, A Gentleman in Moscow, I was totally enchanted by it. So it was with some trepidation that I began his latest book, The Lincoln Highway, fearing, that by comparison, it would be a disappointment. It took me a little longer to get the feel of it but it turned out to be another instant classic.
He is a storyteller of the old school, part Mark Twain, part Alexander Dumas but with a style all his own. His stories have a deceptive simplicity underscored by clever plotting and beautiful writing. You feel yourself purring with joy as you read them and going as slowly as possible to postpone the inevitability of reaching the end. What more could any reader ask of an author?
The narration was excellent, specially Eduardo Ballerini.

A wonderful mystery, superbly written.
Revisado: 04-06-13
Would you listen to The Meaning of Night again? Why?
The writing is so good it bears repeated listening. I had read the book in print so it took me a while to get used to David Timson's narration. However I have really come to like it now and would love to hear more of him.
Any additional comments?
If you liked The Black Tower, An Instance of the Fingerpost or My Name Is Red, you will like this. Great writing combined with excellent storytelling is a rare combination. The Meaning of Night and its sequel, The Glass of Time, are in a class of their own. I hope there will be a third book soon by Michael Cox.
