Historia
Almost every couple faces a "now what?" moment as their last kid moves out of the house. There's a big empty nest looming over this new and uncertain stage in their lives. David and Veronica James chose to look at this next phase of life as a beginning instead of an ending. Rather than staying put and facing the constant reminders of empty bedrooms and backseats, a plan began to develop to sell the nest and hit the highway.

Historia
Between the 12th and 15th centuries in Europe, not all women fit the stereotype of passive housewife and mother. Many led bold and dynamic lives. In this collection of historical portraits, Maria Teresa Brolis tells the fascinating tales of fashion icons, art clients, businesswomen, saints, healers, lovers, and pilgrims - both famous and little known - who challenge conventional understandings of the medieval female experience. Drawing on evidence from literary works and archival documents, Brolis pieces together an intricate overview of 16 women's lives.

Perhaps the fault is in translation...
Revisado: 01-15-22
... but this book is too wordy, the sentences drag on, and it is disjointed, a side note here, a side note there, now back to subject at hand, making it difficult to read. If you enjoyed that sentence then you will enjoy listening to this book.
I am disappointed because the subject matter seems like it would be very interesting.

Historia
This Pulitzer Prize-winning classic tells the poignant tale of a Chinese farmer and his family in old agrarian China. The humble Wang Lung glories in the soil he works, nurturing the land as it nurtures him and his family. Nearby, the nobles of the House of Hwang consider themselves above the land and its workers; but they will soon meet their own downfall. The working people riot, breaking into the homes of the rich and forcing them to flee. When Wang Lung shows mercy to one noble and is rewarded, he begins to rise in the world, even as the House of Hwang falls.

40 years later my mother loved this book I love it
Revisado: 12-07-21
I loved this book. Back in late 70s my mother fell in love with this book. I tried to read it but found it boring. And beyond my grasp. My mother passed many years ago and I rarely thought of this book. I coincidentally met Pearl S. Buck's daughter of recent. She too has written a book (A Rose In A Ditch by Julie Henning) that I am going to read next. That meeting brought to my mind The Good Earth and Pearl S. Book. Now, in my 50s, this book is so much better. It is rich in it's storytelling. It is sobering to me how simple it is to captive of culture and family.

Historia
In this entertaining and eye-opening book, Eleanor Herman revisits some of the sex scandals that have rocked the nation's capital and shocked the public, while asking the provocative questions: does rampant adultery show a lack of character or the stamina needed to run the country? Or perhaps both? While Americans have judged their leaders' affairs harshly compared to other nations, did they mostly just hate being lied to? And do they now clearly care more about issues other than a politician’s sex life?

Historia
In the 70s and 80s, thousands of Hmong families made the journey from the war-torn jungles of Laos to the overcrowded refugee camps of Thailand and onward to the United States, all in search of a new place to call home. Decades later, their experiences remain largely unknown. Kao Kalia Yang was driven to tell her own family's story after her grandmother’s death. The Latehomecomer is a tribute to that grandmother, a remarkable woman whose spirit held her family together.

Revisado: 08-06-21
I'd first heard about the Hmong people a few years ago; probably around 2016. However, I knew nothing about their culture nor did I personally know any. But I now feel like I know Kao Kalia and her family.
Her story is rich, sad and very eye-opening. So many times we hear of those who don't want immigrants in their country. But this story is a perfect example of "Where else can they go??" Beautiful book.

In The Dorito Effect, Mark Schatzker shows us how our approach to the nation's number-one public health crisis has gotten it wrong. The epidemics of obesity, heart disease, and diabetes are not tied to the overabundance of fat or carbs. Instead we have been led astray by the growing divide between flavor - the tastes we crave - and the underlying nutrition.

Historia
Welcome to New York’s legendary hotel for women, the Barbizon. Liberated after WWI from home and hearth, women flocked to New York City during the Roaring Twenties. But even as women’s residential hotels became the fashion, the Barbizon stood out; it was designed for young women with artistic aspirations, and included soaring art studios and soundproofed practice rooms. More importantly still, with no men allowed beyond the lobby, the Barbizon signaled respectability, a place where a young woman of a certain class could feel at home.
