Brad Stulberg and Steve Magness once again team up, this time to demystify passion, showing readers how they can find their passion, sustainably harness its power, and avoid its dangers. They ultimately argue that passion and balance - that other virtue touted by our culture - are incompatible, and that to find your passion, you must lose balance. And they show how to develop the right kind of passion, the kind that lets you achieve great things without ruining your life.

Historia
Champions, as the familiar adage preaches, are not born—they're made. Reaching the top of any sport, or any aspect of life, takes years upon years of dedication and proper preparation. But if there's a huge pool of individuals who have undertaken the same commitment and steps towards becoming the best, what truly separates the winners from everyone else? Joanna Zeiger believes proper mental preparation is the answer. The Champion Mindset is a much-needed and long overdue look into how to program a competitor's mind to achieve optimal success.

Amazingly comprehensive advice
Revisado: 05-24-19
Joanna Zeiger has one heck of a story, a truly amazing career, and a passion for research. She combined all of these in this book, which is the most comprehensive guide to mental toughness for endurance athletes I've ever come across, plus so much more. It's really a how-to manual for endurance athletes, covering all the stuff outside your actual training and nutrition--in short, all the stuff nobody tells you. A really valuable book that will help you avoid years of mistakes.
Also, I always appreciate it when an author reads her own book. What's lost in polished presentation is made up for in really feeling like you're getting inside the author's head and understanding how she sees the world. So that's definitely a plus as far as I'm concerned.

But is the rise of this most brutal and challenging sport - with races that extend into hundreds of miles, often in extreme environments - an antidote to modern life, or is it a symptom of a modern illness? In The Rise of the Ultra Runners, award-winning author Adharanand Finn travels to the heart of the sport to investigate the reasons behind its rise and discover what it takes to join the ranks of these ultra athletes.

Finn at his finest
Revisado: 05-24-19
Adharanand Finn's gift is to enter into a running community and help readers really understand it from the inside via his own adventures (or, more frequently, misadventures). His first two books were great and he's in excellent form here. It's the first thing I've read that helps me really feel like I understand what ultrarunning is about, aside from having lots of time in nature.
The reader kept a lively pace and--kudos!--was great about pronouncing names etc. mostly correctly. That's surprisingly rare. But he doesn't make any effort to shift his accent, so everyone in the book sounds like a slightly overcaffeinated Brit, even the Californians.
It's a small complaint, though, and shouldn't dissuade anyone from getting the book. It's marvelously entertaining.

Possibly the best in the series. Mrs. Hudson's story is spectacularly compelling. What a great character.

Any additional comments?
I've been listening to audiobooks for a looong time and this is one of the best I've heard. Fantastic writing and performance, fascinating characters and time. I found it totally engrossing and unexpected, I read a lot of historical fiction but somehow this one broke the mold.

Pullman is so brilliant and the narrator gives a great performance. I did feel it was a story for younger people than my 45 years so I probably won't read the rest in the series but will remember them for when my son is old enough.

A world-changing adventure story
Revisado: 04-22-15
An excellent sequel to Born to Run though the "natural movement" portion of this book wasn't as fully developed as the "natural running" side of McDougall's first book. As for the narrator, he reads it like he's telling a good story... but in an English accent?! It's an odd choice of reader, and his halfhearted attempts at the accents and languages of the various voices in the book were a shame. Despite this, I really enjoyed the book.
