Augustine said that what we believe is less important than what we love. Philip Yancey writes about the two people he most loves and his most struggled to get close to. This had to be a painful story to revisit, much less to tell. It’s an intimate and courageous memoir.

The book title may hook you but the audible version is s as painful listen.

It’s dry, positions the author as the hero, and constantly engages in list-building for the author.

If you do give it a try, be sure to use an audible credit so you can return it if and when you decide it’s not for you.

I loved the the warmth the author exudes in presenting fairly heady content. He reintroduced me to the enneagram and left me wanting more. To get more, I recommend his Typology podcast, but in this book it’s all in one place. He is a funny guy and tells his story with humor and heart.

I loved the book and its stories.
I didn’t love the fact that it is an abridged version of the printed book but doesn’t say so in its description. It’s fine to abridge a book but you should say so. And in this case, the original (which I bought in kindle form) deserves a full reading. I’ll return the audible version.

I love her playful style and common sense approach. For me, grammar isn’t about perfection. It’s about communication, desired impact, and being taken seriously.
This book will help every day writers do just that.

The reader was superb, really connecting w the topic and had great delivery. The author seems to really know his stuff; he's a pro. He knows how to both Show and Tell the art and science of humor in storytelling. He cares about the topic and his audience. I felt like he wrote this for us, not for his own ego needs. It was fun and funny, concise and practical. He gives just enough theory for us to understand the "why", then majors on the steps/takeaways for his audience.
I would recommend this to all my pastor friends who want to be better, more enjoyable story tellers. And note what the author makes clear: this is not a book to help you become a stand-up comedian (though he generously cites good books for that purpose); it's a book for public speakers who want to add more humor and storytelling to their speeches. I look forward to re-reading/re-listening to this one. Suggestion: I got the kindle version too and found it helpful since Ramakrishna lays out numerous steps and formulas you need to see to track with. I wish it was whisper sync enabled.

Solid concepts and profound personal disclosure. Very helpful, though I found it hard to listen straight through. A no-nonsense, high intensity presentation. Perhaps a little humor would help the medicine go down.

My son told me of this book and I listened to/read it for him, so he could feel more heard when we talk about issues that matter to him. But in the end, I read it for myself. I'm a different person for this book and my views have been altered. I'm a better person, though sadder and madder too. Fortunately, the author and reader brought the perfect tone to the stories of people unjustly treated and innocently imprisoned. There was no trace of divisiveness or self-righteousness. Just a plaintive cry for justice and mercy. It was hard to read and I stopped midway through. But my son encouraged me that there were hopeful, redemptive turns of events ahead. There were. And believe it or not, I look forward to re-reading it. Stories of courage and compassion like this one take a lifetime of devotion in order for a book to emerge. This is a book well-written from a life well-lived.
Thank you, Mr Stevenson

What did you like about this audiobook?

Dave's the man. He inspired and taught me to get debt free and find financial peace.

How has the book increased your interest in the subject matter?

Dave makes you want to be a better leader.

What did you find wrong about the narrator's performance?

This is an abridged book! I'm a big fan (BS3) and love FPU. Heck, we host it at our church every year and even hosted the EntreLeadership simulcast. Hey, I bought the audio AND hardback books. What a huge disappointment to read the book as I listen and notice entire sections, paragraphs and pages just skipped altogether. What's that about? I paid for the whole book, Dave, why couldn't you read it all?Bad form from a great man.
