Historia
It was supposed to be fun. A relaxing trip to a remote mountain retreat where there’s no phone reception. Three couples, friends since high school, are looking forward to a weekend of drinking, reminiscing and flirting. When someone suggests swapping partners, it doesn’t seem like such a bad idea. The lights will be switched off, for privacy. It’s not really cheating if you don’t know who you were with, right? But when the lights come back on, one of the men is dead. No-one can agree who was in which bedroom with whom.

Surprised I finished it
Revisado: 01-20-24
It got more and more ridiculous. I did like the different voices and the mom-lineal narration.

Historia
Between his work on the 2014 Audible Audiobook of the Year, Hamlet, Prince of Denmark: A Novel, and his performance of Classic Love Poems, narrator Richard Armitage ( The Hobbit, Hannibal) has quickly become a listener favorite. Now, in this defining performance of Charles Dickens' classic David Copperfield, Armitage lends his unique voice and interpretation, truly inhabiting each character and bringing real energy to the life of one of Dickens' most famous characters.

There is a reason this is a classic
Revisado: 01-09-24
I first read this book when I was very young. I had seen the old 1935 movie and had the Classic Comic Book. But I had never reread the book until now. It was all I remembered and so much more. Dickens draw characters that are so memorable; I have long shivered at the thought of Uriah Heep, and found him worse than I remembered. The story itself is predictable, but it is told with such skill that the story itself is not the star of this novel—it’s the prose, and Dickens’ ability to transport the reader (or listener) to another time and place. Do not be put off by the length, and under no circumstances should you change the speed of the performance by Richard Armitage. It was a delight.

Glad it was a free listen
Revisado: 12-20-23
I’ve read other McTiernan books and thought they were quite good. Thus, I was glad to see this pop up in my feed. It felt like a formulaic YA book. The narration was flat, I gave it two stars because I did finish it.

Historia
This novel by Carl Hiaasen, author of Tourist Season and Native Tongue, begins as most thrillers do, with a killing. But this is no everyday, hum-drum, garden variety killing. Our hero, Nick Stranahan, a 42-year-old private investigator who has killed five men and been married five times, skewers his attacker's aorta with the razor-sharp bill of a stuffed marlin.

Not for the squeamish
Revisado: 09-11-23
That said, it didn’t bother me at all.
I first read this book 30 years ago, and I consider it one of Hiassen’s best (maybe Striptease is better, but not by much). It holds up all these years later, and I enjoyed listening to the audio book.

Better than the movie
Revisado: 07-13-23
I love the Hitchcock movie and often rewatch it. But the book is richer and darker and is worth a listen. The suspense is still there, especially if you think you know what happens. One disappointment: Bruno never says “criss-cross”!

Both disturbing and boring
Revisado: 10-19-22
I’ve read Ellroy. I’ve been drawn to the books despite the violence and misogyny, as they capture a time and place. I listened to 2 of these. The first one was OK but not great. I bailed on the second one. I recognize the style. I get it. But if you’re a fan of the author, you can’t necessarily expect to like this podcast.
