Better than three stars. . .
Revisado: 10-13-24
I really had fun listening to this book, but alas, the ending let me down. It was too much, too sudden, and so improbable. It could be a great "reality show" series--kind of a "mockumentary."

I loved this book and its perofrmance
Revisado: 10-13-24
When I listen to some books it seems that they were written to be read. The Witches of El Paso is such a book. Ordinarily witches and the supernatural and time travel are not my favorite genre, but Jaramillo makes it feel so right. It is full of sumptuous smells, tastes, sights, and intense feeling. I would be happy for a sequel--unless the magic is gone!

Historia
Maine, 1789: When the Kennebec River freezes, entombing a man in the ice, Martha Ballard is summoned to examine the body and determine cause of death. As a midwife and healer, she is privy to much of what goes on behind closed doors in Hallowell. Her diary is a record of every birth and death, crime and debacle that unfolds in the close-knit community. Months earlier, Martha documented the details of an alleged rape committed by two of the town’s most respected gentlemen—one of whom has now been found dead in the ice.

Historia
In 1972, when workers in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, were digging the foundations for a new development, the last thing they expected to find was a skeleton at the bottom of a well. Who the skeleton was and how it got there were two of the long-held secrets kept by the residents of Chicken Hill, the dilapidated neighborhood where immigrant Jews and African Americans lived side by side and shared ambitions and sorrows. Chicken Hill was where Moshe and Chona Ludlow lived when Moshe integrated his theater and where Chona ran the Heaven & Earth Grocery Store.

I loved everything about this book. The narrator was wonderful, the story was intriguing and compelling, the themes were important, the writing superb! It is humorous and poignant and the unlikely seems so realistic. I think it's my book of the year.

Historia
The Overstory unfolds in concentric rings of interlocking fable that range from antebellum New York to the late 20th-century Timber Wars of the Pacific Northwest and beyond. An air force loadmaster in the Vietnam War is shot out of the sky, then saved by falling into a banyan. An artist inherits 100 years of photographic portraits, all of the same doomed American chestnut. A hard-partying undergraduate in the late 1980s electrocutes herself, dies, and is sent back into life by creatures of air and light.

A Tale for our Time

Long, complex, well written and well read, and such an important book for everyone to read. It is almost a companion book to Braiding Sweetgrass (read The Overstory first). I found both books thoroughly engaging and fascinating.

Historia
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

Revisado: 12-08-22
This is such a touching and engaging book. At first I was very skeptical of the contemplative Octopus, but he provided the perfect tension and emotional tenor behind the very engaging story. One of my very favorites.

Historia
Coach Randy is working mightily to keep it together, and not simply with his vaguely unhappy wife, distant child, and a new boss who's eliminating half the sales force. This season's soccer parents are a demanding bunch. Diane's wine-fueled group emails are almost unintelligible; team mom Jacqui's enthusiasm for the league verges on manic; a divorced couple can barely conceal their murderous rage at each other; and another mom is laser-focused on schooling everyone on what constitutes a healthy snack option.

Set in the mountains of southern Appalachia, Demon Copperhead is the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. Relayed in his own unsparing voice, Demon braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses.

I Binged it, but. . .
Revisado: 12-08-22
People who said the story was a bit overwrought or over written were right. The book had of the comfy contrasted with dangerous elements I love about Penny, there just seemed to be a few too many unlikely links. Finally, maybe I have forgotten but I don't remember the narrator using an "American" type accent for the non-French Canadians in the book. He just was not that good at it and it seemed very jarring and stilted.
